Mazdaspeed 3
In Mazda's recent history, the speedy 3 hatchback is probably the brand's fastest car. It peaked at 148 miles per hour in Car and Driver tests, and ran to 60 in 5.8 seconds with Motor Trend drivers behind the wheel. For starters, rotary engines suffer from poor fuel economy. They consume more fuel while generating less horsepower than piston engines. And because they are prone to leakage, rotary engines also produce more emissions than piston engines. On the other hand, rotary engines have fewer moving parts.
Turbocharging the Mazda RX-8. Nothing can be compared to the feel of a rotary engine that is turbocharged. A turbocharged Mazda RX-8 provides for higher output levels and a smooth power delivery. It is ideal to place the turbo low in the chassis in order to yield low temperatures under the hood.

The Mazda RX8 is a fantastic car! An absolute pleasure to drive. The RX8 is extremely adept at “making progress” and refined enough to make sedate cruising very comfortable. The high revving (9,500rpm rev limiter) of the rotary engine makes the car slightly different to drive than a piston powered vehicle.
Rotary engines have a low thermal efficiency as a result of a long combustion chamber and unburnt fuel making it to the exhaust. Finally, emissions are poor and fuel economy is terrible, and ultimately this is the cause of it's death.
However, it was not shown at the 2017 event. As of 2016, rumors called for the car to be released in January 2020, to coincide with Mazda's 100th anniversary, and would be initially priced at eight million yen (US$75511 in 2015).
Those apex seals don't tend to last long before they need replacing, either. Rebuilding a Wankel at 80,000-100,000 miles is typical, and earlier than most piston engine need such exhaustive work.
The Mazda RX-VISION rotary sports car concept introduces the next-generation SKYACTIV-R rotary engine and Mazda's vision of the ultimate in front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car styling. Making its world premiere in Tokyo, the RX-VISION represents a vision of the future that harbors the soul of the Mazda brand.
The Mazda 3 is considered a sports car by most insurance companies including in Texas. Although the Mazda 3 Sudan is considered a sports car, there are a few notable features that will lower your insurance rates in comparison to other sports cars.
SPIN: MAZDA'S ROTARY ENGINE MAKES A 180-DEGREE TURN
Mazda last built a car powered by a rotary engine in 2012, the RX-8, but had to abandon it largely to poor fuel efficiency and emissions. It has continued to work on the technology, however, as it is one of the company's signature features. So, here are some
signs that the
apex seal in a rotary engine powered vehicle may be
bad.
Poor Compression Symptoms Associated to Faulty Apex Seals
- Hard cold starts.
- Idling or cutting off problems.
- Frequent misfiring.
- Noticeable reduction in power.
One of the major advantages of a rotary engine is its mechanical simplicity. A rotary engine contains far fewer parts than a comparable piston engine. This may decrease the cost of design and manufacture. This also leads to decreased weight.
Top 10 Rotary Cars
- Mazda R100. Mazda may have not been the first to build a passenger vehicle with a rotary engine, but the manufacturer is best known for these internal-triangle engines.
- Mazda RX-8.
- (Audi) NSU Ro 80.
- Mazda Rotary Pickup.
- Mazda Eunos Cosmo.
- Chevrolet Aerovette XP-895.
- Mazda Cosmo 110S.
- NSU Spider.
Problem: The RX-8 has the unique rotary style engine, and this version of the rotary engine has proven to be highly unreliable, particularly after 60,000 miles. Warranty companies say that Mazda have unofficially said that these engines do become unreliable and susceptible to problems at over 60,000 miles.
They are amazing value still, and the engine is unlike any other. The FD is one of the ultimate driver's cars ever built, 50/50 weight distribution, light, turbine smooth engine and flickability. Yes. But you don't buy an RX7 for a “reliable car,” there are much easier, more robust options available.
FDs right there. the nice ones are expensive, because making a beat up one nice is tragically expensive. the FD also has a lot of wear parts, so used parts are usually a no go, because if it broke on your car, then it broke on every other FD. the other thing is that for the most part Mazda is the only parts supplier.
The third generation of the RX-7, known as the FD, was also a 2-seater coupé. This featured a sequentially turbocharged 13B REW engine.
| Third generation (FD) |
|---|
| Platform | Mazda FD |
| Powertrain |
| Engine | 1.3 L (79 cu in) twin-turbocharged 13B-REW twin-rotor |
| Transmission | 5-speed manual 4-speed automatic |
FC stands for 2nd generation rx7, from 1986-1992.
There is a difference between the FC and FD though. From the factory, the FC was very reliable. From the factory, the FD however, was not. While the work required on the FC falls more in line with just replacing stuff becuase the car is old, the FD requires some reworking of the cooling and turbo system.
Mazda Ownership
Today, Mazda is a wholly owned Japanese company, but at one point, Ford one-third of Mazda. Ford has since sold its shares in the company, and various Japanese stakeholders. Currently, Mazda is headquartered in Hiroshima, Japan and is led by Akira Marumoto, President and CEO since June 2018.They are the body codes for the RX7s. FB = First Generation body style 1985 and down.. FC = Second Generation Body style 1986 - 1991. FD = Third Generation body style 1992 - 2002.
