By contrast, the blackout policies of the National Football League serve to encourage attendance to games instead—by only allowing them to be broadcast on television in a team's designated market if a certain percentage of their tickets are sold prior to the game.
The 2019-20 NBA season went on hiatus on March 11 because of the coronavirus pandemic. On June 4, the NBA's Board of Governors approved a competitive format for the comeback of the 2019-20 season with 22 teams returning to play and a start date of July 30.

Select channels may occasionally black out certain games, events, TV shows, and movies. Blackout rules are determined by the leagues, sports associations, content owners, and networks that purchase the rights to these broadcasts. Our agreements sometimes require us to black out content for various reasons.
A blackout is a temporary condition that affects your memory. It's characterized by a sense of lost time. Blackouts occur when your body's alcohol levels are high. Alcohol impairs your ability to form new memories while intoxicated. It doesn't erase memories formed before intoxication.
To avoid blackouts and stream the 2020 MLB season without cable, you'll need an active MLB.tv subscription, a desktop web browser such as Chrome or Firefox, and a VPN. A VPN will make it appear as though you are streaming the game from a different location where blackouts are not in place.
The rule originated in the 1960s when then-Burnley chairman Bob Lord argued that having 3pm matches on TV would negatively affect the attendance of lower league matches.
3pm "blackout"In the 1960s, Burnley F.C. chairman Bob Lord successfully convinced fellow Football League chairmen that televised matches on a Saturday afternoon would have a negative effect on the attendances of other football league games that were not being televised and as a result reduce their financial income.
Regional blackouts are determined based on your physical location and apply to broadcasts that have been sold regionally, per league or team agreements. The chart below outlines which regional team games can be seen in which region.
Blackout RestrictionsIf a game is blacked out in an area, it is not available for live game viewing through MLB.TV. If you are an MLB.TV subscriber within an area subject to blackout, the applicable game will be available as an archived game approximately 90 minutes after the conclusion of the game.
The most effective method to bypass MLB blackouts is by using a VPN to watch games online. A VPN helps you change your IP, which then enables you to avoid a blackout restriction.
How to Bypass ESPN live blackouts with a VPN
- Sign up for and download a quality VPN with enough bandwidth and server locations to get access to every blacked-out game you want.
- Install the VPN app on your device.
- Connect to a server location where the game you want to watch is not blacked out.
Only Prime members can subscribe to NBA League Pass monthly ($28.99/month) or annually ($199.00/year) and watch live out-of-market games. * No cable required. Live games included in your subscription feature out-of-market teams only.
Blackouts are implemented to protect the primary rights holder, as defined by the professional and college sports leagues or teams in a given market. If you see a message that states, "This content is subject to blackout", this is because the event that you requested is not available on ESPN in your location.
Here's how the NBA LEAGUE PASS pricing breaks down because of the shortened season: NBA LEAGUE PASS PREMIUM: $39.99/yr. NBA LEAGUE PASS: $28.99/yr. NBA TV: $19.99/yr.
You can stream the games via Sling (free trial) or Hulu (free trial). TNT has the broadcast.
