Just as humans stare into the eyes of someone they adore, dogs will stare at their owners to express affection. In fact, mutual staring between humans and dogs releases oxytocin, known as the love hormone. This chemical plays an important role in bonding and boosts feelings of love and trust.
So what is splooting? In short, splooting is a type of stretch that involves kicking one or both legs behind the body. The one leg sploot involves one leg behind while the other leg remains tucked underneath. This may look familiar to dog owners, however splooting is not an exclusively canine behavior.
Asserting DominanceBy sitting on people, dogs often feel higher and more in control. If you notice your dog barking or growling at other pets while sitting on your lap, it may be a sign that your dog is feeling the need to assert his dominance.
Your dog may feel the need to protect you or guard you. If you dog has separation anxiety, he may also lay at your feet when you are home to reassure himself you are nearby. Dogs may also lay or sit on your feet as a sign of marking their territory to other dogs. There are many causes to this behavior.
Sometimes, dogs may go between their owner's legs seeking comfort or safety. Some research has found that medium and large dogs are more likely to demonstrate this behavior than small dogs. A lack of confidence, anxiety, or excitement can cause dogs to seek the closeness or protection of their owner's legs.
A lot of this behavior can come from boredom. They may sit on you or your head simply because they like the way you react to it and they simply have nothing better to do. In this sense, it can be considered a learned behavior. They learned to do this because you react in a way they consider a game.
Your dog may simply be happy to see you after a long day without you. For many dogs, sitting beside you -- or on top of you -- is a nice way to spend time together. If you reward your dog's behavior with pets and cuddles, he may have learned that this behavior gets him lots of good affection.
When dogs do something that we don't understand, it often has something to do with pack behavior. When your dog does this, he or she feels like the one in charge. Your dog's sitting on you is also a way of marking you as his own. Whenever a dog puts his tail end on your body, he is rubbing some of his scent onto you.

While Pit Bulls are not good guard dogs because they just love people so much, they may intercede if someone threatens “their” humans. Pit Bulls are great with children. Try forcing your hand down into its throat to make it choke. Once the pit bull has got its teeth into your arm, it won't let go (illegal pit-bull trainers use "breaking sticks" to lever the jaws open). How long do pit bulls live?
American Pit Bull Terrier: 8 – 15 years
American Staffordshire Terrier: 12 – 16 years
Many pit bulls get along well with other pets and may live happily with other dogs without incident. Take control of your dogs' behavior. Feed one dog first one day, feed another one first the next. Let one dog out first one day, let another one out first the next day.
Affected dogs often sit with the affected leg extending out to the side rather than sitting squarely, which they will do even with hip dysplasia.
Establish a routine
- Take your puppy outside frequently—at least every two hours—and immediately after they wake up, during and after playing, and after eating or drinking.
- Pick a bathroom spot outside, and always take your puppy (on a leash) to that spot.
- Reward your puppy every time they eliminate outdoors.
Depending on your dog's case, the vet may suggest the following:
- Weight reduction to take stress off of the hips.
- Exercise restriction, especially on hard surfaces.
- Physical therapy.
- Joint supplements.
- Anti-inflammatory medications (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids)
- Joint fluid modifiers.
