MIAMI — The pedestrian bridge that collapsed over a busy Miami street last year, killing six people, was doomed by a fatal design flaw, federal authorities concluded in a scathing review on Tuesday.
The story of some of the people on the Polcevera Bridge on the day of its collapse, investigating what caused the bridge to fail so catastrophically. On 14 August 2018, the Polcevera Bridge in Genoa collapsed, sending 27 vehicles plummeting to the valley below. 43 people lost their lives.
Here are four of the deadliest bridge collapses in the U.S. since 1967.
- Sunshine Skyway (1980) — Tampa Bay, Fla.
- Cypress Street Viaduct (1989) — Oakland, Calif.
- Silver Bridge (1967) — between Point Pleasant, W.V. and Gallipolis, Ohio.
- Big Bayou Canot Bridge (1993) — Mobile, Ala.
Earthquakes damage bridges by shaking and causing structural damage. Flooding can cause just as much damage due to debris including trees and buildings that are lifted by the water and pushed forcefully against structural elements of the bridge. In both cases, parts of the bridge can crumble, crack, and wash away.
The center section of a bridge over the Schoharie Creek near Amsterdam, N.Y., collapsed suddenly in April 1987. It dropped at least two cars and a truck into raging floodwaters, killing 10 people.
Based on the data extrapolation and 95% confidence interval, the estimated average annual bridge collapse rate in the United States is between 87 and 222 with an expected value of 128. The database showed hazards that have caused bridges to collapse historically, throughout the United States.
The Strait of Messina Bridge is a long-planned suspension bridge across the Strait of Messina, a narrow section of water between the eastern tip of Sicily and the southern tip of mainland Italy, specifically between north Messina's Torre Faro and Villa San Giovanni.
The most frequent causes of bridge failures were attributed to floods and collisions. Flood and scour, with the major flood disaster in 1993, contributed to the frequency peak of bridge failures (almost 53% of all failures).
The geometric distribution was determined to be a valid model for the number of bridge failures per annum through multiple methods. Based on the data extrapolation and 95% confidence interval, the estimated average annual bridge collapse rate in the United States is between 87 and 222 with an expected value of 128.
Completion of new Genoa bridge gives Italy a much-needed injection of hope. Nearly two years after it collapsed with the loss of 43 lives, Genoa's giant Morandi bridge is about to be reborn - providing a much-needed morale boost for a country that has been left traumatised by Europe's worst coronavirus outbreak.
During construction
A large number of bridge accidents occur during the construction of the bridge itself. These accidents are often due to an error made by the engineers, such as a miscalculation. The bridge collapses under its own weight, and this can be deadly for the workers on it at the time. The initial hypotheses were that a structural weakness or a landslide caused the collapse. The bridge was reportedly undergoing maintenance at the time of the collapse, including strengthening the road foundations. It has been reported that the southern stays gave way explosively due to corrosion and damage.
The condition of Italy's road bridges has come under close scrutiny ever since 43 people died in the collapse of the giant Morandi bridge in Genoa in August 2018. Cars fell 45m (148ft) as a 200m stretch of the structure serving the busy A10 motorway collapsed.
