But on D-Day alone, as many as 4,400 troops died from the combined allied forces. Some 9,000 were wounded or missing. Total German casualties on the day are not known, but are estimated as being between 4,000 and 9,000 men.

In other words, the D in D-Day merely stands for Day. This coded designation was used for the day of any important invasion or military operation. Brigadier General Schultz reminds us that the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 was not the only D-Day of World War II.
The first war in recorded history took place in Mesopotamia in c. 2700 BCE between Sumer and Elam.

Of the 4,414 Allied deaths on June 6th, 2,501 were Americans and 1,913 were Allies. If the figure sounds low, Long says, it's probably because we're used to seeing estimates of the total number of D-Day casualties, which includes fatalities, the wounded and the missing.
As of June 29, 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Defense casualty website, there were 4,424 total deaths (including both killed in action and non-hostile) and 31,952 wounded in action (WIA) as a result of the Iraq War.
By 1775 relations between Britain and the colonies had deteriorated badly, and a war broke out between them. The war ended after Lord Cornwallis' surrendered at Yorktown in 1781. The Peace Treaty was then signed in September 1783 at Versailles. The 13 American colonies became the independent United States of America.
Construction lasted 14 years, but took only one day to be destroyed when the
British Army
burned Brunswick Town. Before its demise, the
church was considered one of the finest religious structures in North Carolina.

Once the revolutionary war was lost, some in Britain argued that it had been unwinnable. Lord North was condemned, not for having lost the war, but for having led his country into a conflict in which victory was impossible. In reality, Britain might well have won the war.
After French assistance helped the Continental Army force the British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781, the Americans had effectively won their independence, though fighting would not formally end until 1783.
Battle of Long IslandIt was the first major defeat following the declartion of Independece by the Continential Congress. Washington and his army managed to evacuate from Brooklyn to Manhattan and escape destruction by the British but the battles fought in Manhattan also ended in defeat for American forces.
19, 1781) - The last major battle of the American Revolutionary War. British General Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown was the unofficial end to the war. Treaty of Paris (Sept. 3, 1783) - Treaty that officially ended the war.
Historians say the main reason the colonists were angry was because Britain had rejected the idea of 'no taxation without representation'. Almost no colonist wanted to be independent of Britain at that time. Yet all of them valued their rights as British citizens and the idea of local self-rule.
Since 1945, the United States has very rarely achieved meaningful victory. The United States has fought five major wars — Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan — and only the Gulf War in 1991 can really be classified as a clear success.

By every traditional measure, the United States “won” the Vietnam War. U.S. troops moved with impunity and held the field of battle after almost every engagement. Casualty rates were extremely lopsided in America's favor. Yet, by 1976, South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were communist.
Extremely hard to compare. Vietnam Conflict for the Americans lasted 9.5 years. WW2 in its entirety last six years. As previously stated AT LEAST 60 million dead in WW2, circa 1.6 million during the above period.
In Vietnam, Waldman writes, there was one death for every 58 soldiers deployed. In both World War I and World War II, that rate was about one in 40. And during the Civil War, it was an astounding one in five. "That of course meant that many more Americans would know someone who died."
