The current House speaker is Democrat Nancy Pelosi of California. She was elected to a fourth (second consecutive) term as speaker on January 3, 2021, the first day of the 117th Congress. She has led the Democratic Party in the House since 2003, and is the first woman to serve as speaker.

Washington State Legislature Coming to the Legislature. The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral body with 49 members in the Senate and 98 members in the House of Representatives. Each district is served by one Senator and two House members.

The Senate and House of Representatives meet in session each year to create new laws, change existing laws, and enact budgets for the State. The legislative cycle is two years long.
