Sky & Telescope listed seven important qualities for choosing a telescope: "(1) eyepiece shows a sharp image from edge to edge; (2) smooth focuser with 'precise' feel; (3) mount moves smoothly on both axes; (4) mount is sturdy and stable; (5) tube stops shaking quickly after being touched; (6) eyepiece is at a
The rings of Saturn should be visible in even the smallest telescope at 25x [magnified by 25 times]. A good 3-inch scope at 50x [magnified by 50 times] can show them as a separate structure detached on all sides from the ball of the planet.
If you are unable to find objects while using your telescope, you will need to make sure the finderscope is aligned with the telescope. The finderscope is the small scope attached near the rear of the telescope just above the eyepiece holder. This is best done when the scope is first set up.
Try all of them; they're all good. A low magnification of around 50x will show you the whole moon and give you the "big picture." But to see the moon at its best, try a high magnification, at least 150x. The moon can tolerate high magnification better than any object in the sky.
Experienced planetary observers use 20x to 30x per inch of aperture to see the most planetary detail. Double-star observers go higher, up to 50x per inch (which corresponds to a ½-mm exit pupil). Beyond this, telescope magnification power and eye limitations degrade the view.

- Meade LX200 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain.
The Hubble Space Telescope can see out to a distance of several billions of light-years. A light-year is the distance that light travels in 1 year.
Pluto requires a telescope to be seen. No telescope? Try NASA's Night Sky Network to find star parties and/or astronomy clubs near you. And you don't need a telescope to use your imagination.
Most telescopes that cost less than $300 aren't really worth it. We suggest getting good binoculars instead. A popular first telescope is a Dobsonian. These easy-to-use telescopes offer large apertures for relatively low prices.
A good telescope can cost anywhere from $200 to $8000 US dollars. Depending on if you are just starting out or if you are looking for a professional telescope, prices will differ.
Even a small telescope will show you the other worlds in our solar system. They're also worlds you can observe. Even a small telescope will reveal details on the giant planets. Through a medium-sized scope, you'll see Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn change on a nightly basis.
80-90 mm refractors, 100-120 mm reflectors, 90-125 mm catadioptric telescopes:
- binary stars with angular separation of over 1.5", faint stars (up to 12 stellar magnitude);
- structure of sunspots, granulation and solar flares (with an aperture filter);
- phases of Mercury;
- lunar craters (5 km in diameter);
To make a simple telescope at home, you will need the following:
- two magnifying glasses - perhaps 1 - 1.5 inches (2.5-3 cm) diameter (it works best if one is larger than the other)
- a cardboard tube - paper towel roll or gift-wrapping paper roll (it helps if it is long)
- duct tape.
- scissors.

When Celestron first began, around 1970, the telescopes were made in California. These days, like most other optical products, they are largely made in China, because the cost is much less. When Celestron first began, around 1970, the telescopes were made in California.

There are three main types of telescope. These are refracting telescopes, Newtonian telescopes and Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes.
The science of astronomy took a huge leap forward in the first decade of the 1600s with the invention of the optical telescope and its use to study the night sky. Galileo Galilei did not invent the telescope but was the first to use it systematically to observe celestial objects and record his discoveries.
A 70mm telescope (2.8” aperture size) will provide you with a clear view of the Moon and its craters. You can also check out some of the bigger planets in the solar system. Though don't expect to see every detail of the planets.
Although Jupiter is big and bright, it doesn't tolerate high magnification well — the image tends to go soft quickly. Consequently, you will rarely use more than 40x per inch of aperture. I find that my 8-inch is limited to about 200x on nights of steady seeing.
Each telescope has its own advantage, for instance the refractor is better for observing the planets and the moon and the reflector for deep-sky objects (e.g. galaxies). However, the refractor suffers from what is known as chromatic aberration.
With so many opportunities for seeing the ISS, you've got time to try out some new tricks. If you've never seen it through a telescope, it's easier than you think. The amazing thing is that you can discern its shape, especially those golden, kapton-insulated solar arrays.
The planets Jupiter and Saturn are the most spectacular of the planets to observe through a telescope. Jupiter is a very good and easy target for a first telescope. It is large, bright and shows some colour even when using a small telescope.
The ring system that makes the planet both beautiful and spectacular cannot be seen unaided. But any small telescope or large binoculars magnifying at more than 20 power will reveal the rings.
