Since 1961, it has been owned by a charitable trust established by the family. Lady Victoria Leatham, antiques expert and television personality, followed her father, Olympic gold-medal winning athlete, IAAF President and MP, David Cecil, the 6th Marquess, by running the house from 1982 to 2007.

Dogs accompanying visitors at Burghley Horse Trials must be kept under control and on a short lead at all times (extending leads are not permitted). Please clean up after your dog – bags are available around the showground. Assistance Dogs only are permitted in the grandstand and Members' Enclosure.
We are currently planning for next year's Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) to go ahead. The team are working hard to confirm details for the 2021 qualifier season, to ensure that the much-loved Horse of the Year Show is both safe for everyone and a fitting Championship event.
It is with great disappointment and regret, which we know will be shared by many, that we announce the cancellation of the 2021 Badminton Horse Trials which was due to be held “Behind Closed Doors†between the 5th and 9th May.
The 2021 event has been cancelled. The box office will re-open for the 2022 event (4th – 8th May) in January 2022. In the meantime the website will be amended with news updates over the coming months.
Sadly, two horses have died during cross-country day at The Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials in Gloucestershire, England. The first, Skwal, ridden by Andrew Downes (GBR) jumped the course and finished.
Completed the most times – Andrew Nicholson (NZL) is the holder of this record with 37 times (winning in 2017). Previously Lorna Clarke held the record with 22 times. Lorna retired after the 1992 event. Riding three horses in the same competition at Badminton has been achieved twice.

Badminton is a 4 Star Event, the highest grade and one of only 6 such events in the world. Badminton is the oldest and generally accepted as the most prestigious event. Both riders and horses must qualify by completing other similar grade events in order to compete at Badminton.
