There is no direct connection from Thessaloníki to Alonissos. However, you can take the bus to Volos, take the walk to Volos, then take the car ferry to Alonnisos. Alternatively, you can take a vehicle from Thessaloníki to Alonissos via Larissa, Volos, Volos, and Skiathos in around 10h.

It is certainly more expensive than some of the big Spanish resorts . However having been to Crete , Rhodes and kefalonia , I don't think there is much difference . The great thing about skiathos is you can find somewhere for a meal on any budget .

The main ports to the Sporades islands are the ports of Volos and Agios Constantinos, in central Greece. Ferries from these two ports go to the islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos. Ferries to Skyros depart from Kymi, a small port town in Evia island.
Re: Do you need to have a car in Skiathos? No, you don't need a car at all, there is a good bus service that operates from the east end of the new port, and will take you to beaches all down the island. Enjoy! Plenty of taxis at the airport and down by the ferry dock on the new port.
