Richard Bacon has left hospital after spending six days in a medically induced coma. The former Blue Peter presenter emerged from University Hospital Lewisham in south-east London on Thursday, accompanied by his wife Rebecca and walking with the aid of a frame.
Richard Bacon has said he has given up alcohol after recovering from a mystery illness that resulted in him being put into a medically induced coma. The former Blue Peter host said he nearly died after falling ill while flying to Britain from the US this month, and was taken off the plane in a wheelchair.
The risks of medically induced coma, in part, stem from complications such as pneumonia that can arise because of the patient's immobility, Mayberg said. It's also difficult to tell the severity of a patient's brain damage because traditional neurological tests don't work when a patient is in a coma.
The purpose of a medically induced coma, Souter explained, is to ensure the "protection and control of the pressure dynamics of the brain." High pressure caused by brain swelling can starve some areas of the brain of oxygen; swollen brain tissue can also be injured by pushing against the inside of the skull.
A drug-induced coma puts a person into a deep state of unconsciousness, which allows the brain to rest and thus decreases its swelling. The decrease in swelling can result in less pressure being put on the brain, which lessens the risk of damaging effects.
