And yet, Canada's oil is one of the dirtiest in the world. A study published in the prestigious journal Science found that 46 countries produced oil with a lower per barrel carbon footprint than Canada. The truth is that exporting more Canadian oil will increase global carbon emissions.
Canada produces more oil and natural gas than we need to meet energy demand within our country, so the remainder is exported. Essentially all of Canada's oil and natural gas exports go to one customer: the United States.
The massive industrial-scale nature of oilsands production worked for decades to make producing oil in the Fort McMurray region a higher-cost and higher-emissions proposition.
In 2019, Alberta had the highest amount of crude oil production in Canada. In 2019, Alberta leads the provinces in crude oil production with 80.5% of Canada's total production, Saskatchewan produced 10.5%, and Newfoundland and Labrador produced 5.6%.

All that rain (and melted snow) keeps our reservoirs full and our turbines turning to generate electricity for the whole province. This simple, sustainable process is why BC Hydro electricity is an incredible 96% clean.
Close to 95% of BC's electricity is generated from renewables. Its renewable capacity is more than 16 000 MW, representing approximately 90% of total installed capacity. Hydro remains the most important source of power generation, followed by biomass, natural gas, wind, and oil.
Residential: $0.0884 per kWh for the first 1,350 kWh in an average two-month billing cycle, and $0.1326 per kWh for any additional consumption. Small General Service: $0.1173 per kWh. Medium General Service: $0.0906 per kWh. Large General Service: $0.0567 per kWh.
How many dams does BC Hydro maintain and operate in the province? BC Hydro operates some of the largest dams in the world. Today, we maintain and operate 82 dams at 40 locations across British Columbia.
The average BC household pays about $500 per year for water and sewer services through utility user fees and property or parcel taxes. This means that we pay $1.37 per day to receive fresh water to our taps, and remove used water from our homes.
In March 2011, Terasen Gas, British Columbia's largest natural gas distributor, was renamed FortisBC Energy Inc., as both companies are owned by Fortis Inc.
We rely mainly on the power of moving or falling water to produce mechanical/electrical energy to power the province of B.C. We have 31 generating stations sending electricity along 75,000 kilometres of power lines that range over mountain tops and river valleys, forested wilderness and high density urban areas.
Simon Fraser University professor emeritus Lindsay Meredith says the pandemic is partly to blame for British Columbia's high fuel prices, as well as supply issues and provincial and federal taxes. B.C. produces very little oil and relies on external markets.

Although BC Hydro and FortisBC are the main public utilities in B.C., there are five B.C. municipalities that have their own utilities, and sell electricity directly to their customers.
Similarly FortisBC charges 14.4% more than BC Hydro for Tier 1 electricity, 17.8% more for Tier 2, and 24.4% more than Nelson Hydro for 1,500 kWh.

BC Hydro is the largest producer and distributor of electricity in British Columbia, meeting the energy needs of 1.8 million customers. The utility owns and operates 32 hydroelectric generation facilities, and three natural gas thermal power plants, producing up to 54,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year.
Water use planning is an example of sustainable work in practice at BC Hydro. Water use plans were developed for most of BC Hydro's hydroelectric facilities through a consultative planning process involving participants, such as government agencies, First Nations, local citizens and other interest groups.
