Joeys poop and pee into the pouch and that means mother kangaroo has to clean the pouch regularly. The mother also cleans the pouch the day the new joey is born. Joeys not only poop and pee into the pouch but when they get older they bring in the dirt when they move in and out of the pouch.
Kangaroos don't fart. These beasts were once the mystery of the animal kingdom -- thought to produce low-methane, environmentally friendly toots. However, new research on kangaroo crop dusting suggests this isn't true.
This fleshy pocket is stretchy and slightly sticky, and opens horizontally upwards to lessen the chance of the young falling out.
All kangaroos have short hair, powerful hind legs, small forelimbs, big feet and a long tail. They also use their tail when swimming; that's right – kangaroos are good swimmers! They swim to avoid predators, and can use their forepaws to drown pursuers. Kangaroos can't move backwards.
If the kangaroo approaches, turn your body sideways, exposing a narrow profile to the animal and protecting your face and organs. Raise your hands and lean your head away from the animal to minimize the chances of being scratched across the face by the kangaroo's nasty claws. Retreat, but do not turn your back and run.
Like these animals, kangaroos and wallabies are herbivorous, eating mainly leaves and grass in the wild. The kangaroos and wallabies get things like beets, carrots, broccoli, raisins, bananas, and apples in small amounts cut up into appropriate-sized pieces to be sprinkled over their pellets.
Red kangaroos regularly leap 5ft (1.5m), and their highest jumps are said to be around 10ft (3m). That is about on a par with impalas, but not as high as the bounciest hares and jackrabbits.
When a kangaroo is moving slowly the tail is used as an extra leg and supports the kangaroo when it is standing on its hind legs. Kangaroos have good eyesight but only respond to moving objects. They have excellent hearing and can swivel their large ears in all directions to pick up sounds.
Twins are a rarity in the kangaroo world, and Uralla owner Mandy English has only ever heard of two other sets in 15 years as a wildlife carer. "It's a very rare event, and we've been really lucky to be able to see the joeys in the pouch," she says.
During warmer weather, the marsupials will dig holes to sleep in to keep cool. Nocturnal kangaroos have special night vision allowing them to see well at night. This is because the eyes have a distinct auditory nerve. Sleeping in groups called mobs, kangaroos are social creatures even during periods of sleep.
She explained that when kangaroos are threatened by a predator they actually throw their babies out of their pouches and if necessary throw it at the predator in order for the adult to survive.
Kangaroo females get pregnant in the regular way. They shed an egg from their ovary and it drifts down the fallopian tube where, if it meets up with sperm, the egg is fertilized and then embeds itself in the wall of it's mother's uterus.
Experts believe that many smaller species and subspecies of Kangaroos out there live where you can't see them. They burrow underground and only come out on occasion.
Red kangaroos leave the pouch for good at around eight months and continue to suckle for another three to four months; grey kangaroos leave at about 11 months, continuing to suckle until they are as old as 18 months.
Kangaroos sometimes eat meatThey [generally] lack the equipment to capture and kill other animals, or the digestive system to handle a meaty diet.” Tree kangaroos will eat birds and even cows will chew on a bone.” Graeme also recognizes that known herbivores are not all strict vegetarians.
Size and weight: A kangaroo can reach heights from anywhere between 3- 8 feet (1 to 3 meters) and can weigh between 40 and 200 lbs (18-100kg). The eastern gray kangaroo is the heaviest marsupial in the world and the red kangaroo is the largest.
They jump! This is called saltatory locomotion and it's how kangaroos move. They can also move quickly from side to side with amazing agility, but they cannot jump backward because of their thick, muscular tail. Their long feet and heavy tail also make walking impossible, forward or backward.
How can you tell males from females? Older males are easy to identify because they are much larger than females, and have well-developed forearm muscles. Females can be easy to identify if they have a large joey because the joey will make an obvious bulge in the pouch and often its head, arms or legs will poke out.
Eastern grey kangaroos are mainly nocturnal. They sleep during the day in the shade of trees and shrubs, coming out at night to graze on grass. They are also very social animals, living in mobs of up to 20.
Contrary to popular belief, kangaroos don't normally try to box, or punch, each other, says Festa-Bianchet. Instead, they prefer to balance on their strong tails and kick with their powerful back legs. "If the kangaroo had done that to the guy it could have disemboweled him," says Festa-Bianchet.
Males of both of these species make loud 'coughing' growls or barks, often when fighting over females. You can hear some samples of these sounds below. Also, male Eastern Grey Kangaroos have been documented emitting soft clucking sounds when interacting with a female.
A kangaroo pouch may look like a simple pocket, but it's actually a complex nursery that contains everything a growing joey needs. The pouch is hairless on the inside, and is lined with sweat glands that release antimicrobial liquid to keep the joey safe from germs.
Though kangaroos are famous for hopping, they actually get around more often by walking on all four legs, including their small, armlike front legs.
But there are more than twice as many kangaroos as people in Australia, according to official government figures, and many Aussies consider them pests. Landholding farmers, called graziers, say that the country's estimated 50 million kangaroos damage their crops and compete with livestock for scarce resources.

The shu-roo uses a pattern of ultrasonic sounds emitted approximately 40 metres either side of the vehicle and projecting some 400 metres to the front of the vehicle. By all accounts the units are very effective, and some government departments require fitting of the units to vehicles in regional areas.

It's when wildlife generally – and kangaroos in particular – are most active. It's also when they can't see the car because they are blinded by the headlights. If a kangaroo jumps out or is on the road the first step is to wash off as much speed as possible by braking in as straight a line as possible.
If you accidentally hit an animal with your vehicle, your insurance agency will not find you at fault. But an accident involving an animal is not your fault.
Fortunately there are some simple things you can do to maintain control and minimise your risks.

- Off road (but not in a good way)
- The local wildlife.
- Sunset, night, rain.
- Stay sharp.
- Country drivers.
