If your Fitbit suddenly stops counting your steps; you need to restart your Fitbit at least 3 times. My Fitbit Inspire HR stopped counting steps and restarting 3 times fixed the issue.
In the lab, when subjects jogged or walked normally, the devices undercounted steps 50 percent of the time, compared with observed steps. Outside of lab conditions, however, the Fitbits would overestimate steps by as much as 35 percent compared to research-grade pedometers and accelerometers.
Make sure that you wear the device so that it is firmly on your wrist. Some people don't like a tight fit for their watch or bracelet, but if your fitness band flops around on your wrist, you're likely to get false step counts. (A loose fit can also prevent heart rate sensors and other features from working correctly.)
How to change your activity goals on Fitbit. Tap on the Account icon in the top left of the Today tab > Activity & Wellness > Daily Activity > Change your step goal, distance goal, calories burned goal, active minutes goal, floors climbed goal and hourly activity goal.
Fitbit starts everyone off with a 10,000-step goal, and here's why: It adds up to about five miles each day for most people, which includes about 30 minutes of daily exercise—satisfying the CDC's recommendation of at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
Here are some creative ways to increase your daily step count:
- Build in a daily walk.
- Take mini-walks.
- Talk in person.
- Go the wrong way.
- Go the extra mile.
- Skip the magazines in the waiting room.
- Take the stairs.
- Walk and talk.
Tip 1: Improve step counting and distance accuracy
- In the Fitbit app, tap the 'Account' icon which should be the icon with your profile photo if you've used one.
- Next, select 'Exercise' and you should see an option for 'Stride Length'.
- If you toggle it off, you'll be able to set this manually.
Keep track of your calories and lose weight using Fitbit. You can set goals for water consumption and body fat percentage, plus you can actually set the amount of calories you want to eat in a day.

It's based largely on your basal metabolic rate (BMR) or the energy your body expends at rest—even when you're sleeping! —just to keep you alive. Once you're up and moving around, Fitbit will also take your heart rate (if your tracker can measure that) and any activity—automatically or manually logged—into account.
