09/10/2021The Gallatin is no longer under any restrictions. The Trout in the Gallatin are starting to transition into slower water due to colder temps at night. When figuring out where to fish, look for seams and varying riffles.
After the movie was released, anglers both veteran and rookie descended on Montana in droves to fish both the rivers in southwestern Montana where "River" was filmed (the upper Yellowstone, Gallatin and Boulder rivers), and the Blackfoot where the story was set.

It originates in the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park in northwestern Wyoming, in the Gallatin Range of the Rocky Mountains. It flows northwest through Gallatin National Forest, past Big Sky, Montana, and joins the Jefferson and Madison approximately 30 mi (48 km) northwest of Bozeman.
The trout on the river, consisting of both brown and rainbow trout, average around 12 inches, with 16 inches considered a large trout although some lunkers exceeding 20 inches are found. Grayling and cutthroat trout are also found in the Gallatin River.
Although both the book and movie are set in Missoula and on the Blackfoot River, it was filmed in late June to early July 1991 in south central Montana in Livingston and Bozeman, and on the nearby upper Yellowstone, Gallatin, and Boulder Rivers. The waterfall shown is Granite Falls in Wyoming.
On average, the upper Madison River is about 18" deep. It looks and fishes like one giant mountain stream and is impossible to walk across in many sections due to its swift current. The rocks along the bank are about the size of footballs, making wade fishing difficult over the course of an entire day.

- Use foam patterns when fishing dries.
- Use less weight nymph fishing.
- Make less false casts.
- Raise your rod height.
Yellow Sallies (Isoperla) are smaller stoneflies that are common in many streams across the country. They are smaller than most stones and often come off unexpectedly when other mayflies are hatching, and thus they are often overlooked. A common indication is the red butt on the fly.
Fly Fishing the Gallatin River near BozemanThe Gallatin River changes dramatically several times over its course, but offers anglers everything from meandering meadows, to rocky canyon pocket water, to long gliding runs through Montana's open prairie.
Where does the Missouri River start and end? The Missouri River begins in Three Forks, Montana, and ends in St.Louis, Missouri. It crosses several states, including South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, and Kansas, covering 2,341 miles.

Spruce Moths are endemic parasites that feed on the new growth of Douglas Fir, Subalpine Fir, and Engelmann Spruce trees. Adult moths hatch from their pupal cases in late July or early August. After emerging the adults are viable for 7 to 10 days in which time they mate, deposit eggs, and die.
Bozeman Pond is near Troy. The most popular species caught here are Bluegill, Largemouth bass, and Spotted bass.
Around the BozoneFour small lakes, all within walking distance of town, offer fishable populations of rainbow trout: Bozeman Pond, Glen Lake, Cattail Pond, and the Regional Park Pond. Of the four, Bozeman Pond and Glen Lake also offer warm-water species such as largemouth bass, yellow perch, and bluegill.
Native species such as Yellowstone cutthroat trout and Arctic grayling along with introduced brook trout can be found in Hyalite Reservoir. The alpine gems of Hyalite Lake, Emerald Lake, and Heather Lake hold cutthroat and grayling.

The Madison River is a headwater tributary of the Missouri River, approximately 183 miles (295 km) long, in Wyoming and Montana.
