How does a dash cam work? A dash cam is mounted onto the windscreen and records the road when you are driving. The dash cam starts recording automatically when the ignition key is turned. It records on a continuous loop, with each clip filmed on a short 3-minute segment onto a micro SD card.

If you need to identify your camera by the Serial number, the Serial number can be located on the underside of your Dash Cam, printed on a sticker.

How To Retrieve Videos From Your Dashcam
- Step 1: Remove the Memory Card. This step will vary depending on the type of dashcam you own.
- Step 2: Insert Memory Card Into Adapter. This step only applies to Micro SD cards.
- Step 3: Insert Memory Card Into Card Reader.
- Step 4: Copy Video Files to your PC.

- Take your Dash Cam inside your house.
- Turn the 'Parking Mode' OFF.
- Plug in the Dash Cam using a mains charger or USB charger.
- Charge the Dash Cam for 3 hours with the camera ON.
- Once the Dash Cam has finished charging, un-plug it and leave it ON for 10-15 minutes.
It is a good idea to remove your dash cam once you have left the vehicle to avoid your car being broken into. If you have parking mode on your camera or want to keep it in the vehicle it is best to place it in a discreet place.

Although it will not lower your insurance rate, it can protect against insurance fraud by proving who was at fault during an accident, capture disturbances while your car is parked, record road trips, and allow you to review your teen's driving habits.
Dashboard mounted cameras are continuously running. Most will automatically turn on and record when the officer activates his overhead lights, but they can be manually activated as well. Since the GDPR became applicable, the DPA has issued two decisions on the legality of dashcams in Austria. With recourse to the Supreme Administrative Court's ruling, the DPA found in both cases that dashcam footage was inadmissible: The DPA imposed a fine of €220 for the illegal use of the dashcam. (8)
