It was opened to the public in 1847. Today, it houses a
collection of 673 species of animals, with 19,289 individuals, making it one of the largest collections in the United Kingdom. The zoo is sometimes called Regent's Zoo.

London Zoo is to end a 170-year tradition and move its elephants out of the city. The announcement comes after an elephant at the zoo crushed a worker to death. The three elephants will move to a more open enclosure and will join a breeding bull and two pregnant elephants at Whipsnade.
There are plenty of good exhibits and some of the newer enclosures are very good indeed, but for good reasons most of the larger animals are now at Whipsnade but there is still a Tiger and Lion exhibit, plus the giraffe house. The aquarium is an old exhibit but it was still a very good example.
London Zoo is 14 ha (36 acres) big, while the much bigger Whipsnade Zoo is spread over 243 ha (600 acres). Whipsnade Zoo, Dunstable is almost 17 times bigger than the London Zoo – making it the biggest zoo in the UK. In fact, visitors can take along their cars inside the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo for an additional cost.

Asian elephant Ming Jung arrived at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire from Antwerp in Belgium last year. The 12-year-old has since been introduced to the herd's females, and keepers said Ming Jung was “obviously smittenâ€.
