For the 111 years Notre Dame has played football, it has been an independent, resisting all overtures to join a conference. Yesterday, its board of trustees decided to keep it that way, rejecting an approach from the tradition-laden Big Ten and maintaining the university's national identity and its football income.
First wave: Nebraska joins
Big Ten officials later stated that they had no plans to expand beyond 12 teams in the near future. Furthermore, the decision by Penn State to add varsity men's ice hockey starting in 2012 triggered a series of changes in college ice hockey conference alignment.The UofC left the Big Ten because it made a conscious effort to not prioritize its ability to be competitive in athletics (i.e. they don't offer athletic scholarships). It abolished football in 1939, and ended up leaving the Big Ten in the 1940s because it wasn't competitive with other Big Ten schools in other sports.
The move was done solely for football purposes and completely changed the way the ACC schedule worked on the basketball side of things. Gone was the simply perfect model of playing every team home and away each year.
