Stop short of where you want to moor, with your boat straight and in deep water. Move forward very slowly, pointing the front of the boat towards the bank, then use reverse to stop the boat just before the front hits the bank. Put the engine into neutral. Your crew should step ashore, not jump.

Workers load a mule onto an Erie Canal boat with the help of a second mule and pulley system. Mules and horses were used to power canal boats. Attached to the boats by a rope, the animals walked along a towpath next to the canal, pulling the boats behind them as they went. Teams of horses or mules worked in shifts.
In just nine years, tolls charged on the canal had completely repaid the state loan and financed several branch canals in the state. The Erie Canal, connecting the Hudson valley with the Great Lakes, was completed in 1825 at a cost of $7 million.

The average narrowboat is capable of carrying around 20 tonnes on a draught of about three feet.
Built between 1817 and 1825, the original Erie Canal traversed 363 miles from Albany to Buffalo. It was the longest artificial waterway and the greatest public works project in North America. It transformed New York City into the nation's principal seaport and opened the interior of North America to settlement.
The work was crude and hard with most men digging the four-foot-deep and forty-foot-wide ditch with only shovels and pickaxes. Until the advent of “Brainard's barrow,†known today as a wheelbarrow, dirt was hauled away on small rectangular carts that were awkward and inefficient.
Mules were a popular draft animal on the Erie Canal. An offspring of a male donkey and a female horse are generally less stubborn and more intelligent than a donkey and hardier and longer lived than a horse. Many barges had a small compartment to stable mules in the front of the barge.
