Presidential elections were held for the first time in Ghana on 27 April 1960. The elections were held alongside a referendum on creating an executive presidency. The winner of the election would become the country's first President if the new republican constitution was passed (which it did).
The United Gold Coast convention pioneered the call for independence within the shortest possible time after the Gold Coast legislative election in 1947. Led by the big six, the Gold Coast declared its independence from the British on 6 March 1957. The Gold Coast was named Ghana.

Sir Gerald Hallen Creasy GCMG OBE (1 November 1897 – 9 June 1983) was a British colonial administrator. He served as Governor of the Gold Coast and Malta. The "Christiansborg cross-roads shooting incident" that led to the 1948 Accra Riots occurred while Creasy was Governor in Gold Coast.
The committee made provision for greater African representation in Government as there were increasing demands for a representative government by Gold Coasters. The Watson Commission had earlier recommended an extensive Legislative Assembly with more Ghanaian inclusive on 26 April 1948.
