Generally speaking, you can rely on your hard drive for three to five years on average. A compelling study that proved this statistic comes from the online backup company Backblaze who analyzed the failure rates of 25,000 running hard drives.
Similarly to the internal versions, the hard drives will work with the computer as long as it supports the connection type. USB and External SATA use the same connector in all generations, while FireWire drives may need an adapter for cross-generation support.
To check the SATA compatibility, you can look at the specification page of your laptop or desktop (or maybe the Motherboard's Model Number, if assembled). Even if you have SATA 2.0 compatible motherboard in your computer, that doesn't mean you can only use SATA 2.0 drive in your system.
Size the replacement driveThe good news is that almost all laptop hard drives are the same size and use some form of a SATA interface. Naturally, make sure that the drive's capacity is as big or bigger than the drive you're replacing. You want to make sure that you have at least as much room as you had before.

A laptop might come with a 128GB or 256GB SSD instead of a 1TB or 2TB hard drive. A 1TB hard drive stores eight times as much as a 128GB SSD, and four times as much as a 256GB SSD. The advantage is that you can access your online files from other devices including desktop PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones.

While SSDs are faster, more robust and more power-efficient, HDDs are more affordable – especially when it comes to larger capacities. As we mentioned earlier, if you have the option then it may be worth getting a smaller SSD for your operating system and apps, along with a HDD to store your files.
1. Data Engine T2HP High-Performance: The fastest and highest performance PCIe NVMe SSD available in the market today. Offered in 3.2TB and 6.4TB user capacities, Data Engine T2HP is in a class of its own, surpassing 1.7 million random IOPS and 6.8GB/s in bandwidth per SSD.
Add-In Card SSDs (AIC)As mentioned above, PCIe is the faster type of SSD and therefore will have a higher performance speed than SATA so AICs would have the potential to be a lot faster. Also, AICs are more preferred than M. 2 drives since they can access more lanes on PCIe.
In the rare case you can't live without 1TB space, 512GB SSD is far better. The bottleneck of modern computers is HDD. CPU & RAM are pretty fast but HDD can't keep up with them, so SSD is the optimum pair. 512GB is a good amount of space unlike 256GB.
