The ground drive belt connects the engine crankshaft to the transaxle pulley to drive the rear wheels. If the belt breaks, the lawn tractor won't move. If the belt is worn, the lawn tractor moves sluggishly because the belt slips on the pulley.

If there is no obstruction, feed your tape measure through the pulleys, across the center of the deck, and hook it on the opposite side. For a round deck, locate the widest area of the circle, or the diameter, and extend your tape measure across that area. Note the distance on your tape measure. This is your deck size.

There's no definite amount of time that a mower belt is supposed to last, but increased mower use shortens the interval in which a belt needs replacement. Simply put, more use equals more wear. Additionally, faulty belts or mechanical failures like a seized pulley can make lawn mower belts break prematurely.

The number following it is the outside length of the belt in tenths of inches. The inside length of the belt is typically 2" less for a 4L belt, and 1-1/2" less for a 3L belt. "Classic" v-belt numbers start with a letter identifying the cross section, “A” through “E” - see V-Belt Dimensions below.
Belt Pitch Length: The pitch length of a belt is the length at the pitch diameter of the sheaves being used. The pitch length is obtained by adding the pitch circumference of one sheave to twice the center distance between two equal diameter sheaves at a specified tension.
Ribbed belts have lengthwise grooves on the inside. Measure the pitch of the groove, i.e. distance between projections, e.g. 3.54 mm = belt type PK. Count the number of grooves, i.e. the number of projections - e.g. 7, as shown in the picture. Width measurement is not usually accurate and is used only to check.

- Pulsation or shock loading.
- Small sheave diameters.
- Backside idlers.
Place your pulley face down on a flat surface, then put your ruler or caliper on top, measure from outside edge to outside edge across the circle of the pulley. Check carefully to make sure you are measuring across the center.
