Savannah feels more down to earth. Charleston has a bit more shopping, arts and nightlife than Savannah but its really apples and oranges. As far as ghost tours go, we've done both in each city and find Savannah's better or just as good as Charleston's. Savannah has more ghost tours altogether.

Actually, my trip to Charleston overall was worth it. The city has also been featured on many "cutest towns in America" lists (or some equivalent of that) in travel magazines, and many people I know who've been say it's a great place to visit.
The reason Charleston is so expensive to fly into is the fact that there is little competition into or out of that airport; why Atlanta would be cheaper; Savannah has a discount (Independence) flying in and out.
Downtown Charleston lends itself a European feel and is a highly sought-after place to live, making it more expensive than other areas. The average home price in the area is just over $700,000.
Bring pants, light sweaters and jackets this time of year. You might want to bring a thicker jacket and some gloves for chillier days and nights — especially if you plan on heading to the beach at any time. Don't forget to check the weather report before you leave. Very rarely, Charleston does see snow.
The Historical District is the ideal neighborhood in which to stay while touring Charleston. This area is comprised of wonderfully preserved historic landmarks, monuments, and homes. Set on a peninsula, the Historical District neighborhood is incredibly walk-able.

The major differences between Savannah and Charleston have more to do with the look of each place: Savannah is more of a “walking” city, with its 20-some lushly green and tidy squares, still considered marvels of urban design. Our accommodations in Savannah could not have been better for exploring the city.
