The primary reason why Gibson guitars are so expensive is that they are manufactured in the United States. Gibson also uses a premium, vintage wood. Other guitar brands use alternative woods that are not acceptable to Gibson customers. There are other reasons why Gibson guitars are more expensive.
Expect to pay between $1,600 and $2,000 for a Gibson ES-335 Pro on the vintage market.
Hollow body guitars are primarily used in jazz and blues. They produce clear, soft tones. Semi-hollow body guitars utilise a centre block of wood. They are able to deal with increased gain.

The Epiphone Dot is twice the price of the LP Special II and I can easily say that the extra cost is well worth it. The Dot is a fantastic guitar that allows guitarists to have a great experience with an ES-335 style guitar without having to spend four figures.
335s have been used for rock since the dawning of time. Yes, though a Semi-Hollowbody would probably work better (pretty much all 335 shapes sans Gretschs are Semi-Hollow) because of reduced feedback, but there isn't anything that can't play punk. You could put a pick up on a fencepost and play punk.

The 1st and 2nd indicate the year of manufacture for the 6 digit serial numbers which we've been using since 2000. Those beginning with "94": In 1994, Gibson's Centennial year, many instruments have a serial number that begins with "94" for the year, with the remaining 6 digits indicating the ranking number.
Les Pauls are their favorite guitars to copy. There actually is one way you can get a guitar made by Gibson in China. Back in 2006 Gibson purchased one of the largest piano factories in China. They continued to make pianos but also added a line of other musical instruments made in that same factory.
The most important dating feature on guitars with six-digit serial numbers is that, starting in 1970, Gibson began stamping “Made In USA” near the serial number on the back of the headstock. Since the value of a Gibson Les Paul differs widely between 1970 and 1975, it is very important to pinpoint the year.

Gibson did not use serial numbers at that time but started in 1953. The first digit of the series number is the last digit of the year. If the stamped number consists of 5 digits, there is a space between the first and second digit (a separation between the last digit of the year and the actual serial number).
A real Gibson Les Paul has only two screws holding on the truss rod cover. An inexpensive LP copy will have three screws. This leaves a small wood block for the bottom truss rod screw. The fake shown below had a wad of putty squeezed into the top of the truss rod route so the screw would have something to grab.
Keep in mind, Gibson never inked serial numbers on the Gibson Les Paul Standard but they did ink the custom shop series and some Les Paul Classics. Another thing to look for is whether the numbers are too close. Fakes are often too close. The fake one on the right has no serial number at all.
Every Gibson solid body guitar had a serial number on the back of the headstock since mid 1953 and later. In order for it to be a true Gibson Les Paul, without a serial number on the headstock, it would have had to been made in 1952 or early 1953. That would be quite a prize!
