What's amazing to me is that the Oculus Go delivers an experience that is good enough that, for most people, a larger VR device won't be necessary. It's a superior little headset for watching 360 videos, sampling quick immersive demos and experiencing what VR has to offer.
The Oculus Go takes VR to a new generation for people who don't want the hassles of either mobile or PC VR. For the purposes of socializing or playing simple VR experiences, this is all the headset you'll need. It's not completely operable offline, as many of the apps use a Wi-Fi connection.
The Oculus Go has a 2560 x 1440 fast-switch LCD display inside that can run at a refresh rate of 60Hz or 72Hz. The Oculus Rift uses one 1080 x 1200 OLED display per eye for an effective resolution of 2160 x 1200 at a faster 90Hz. The Oculus Rift supports full motion tracking of the headset and Touch controllers.
The Oculus Go is an affordable, comfortable standalone virtual reality headset that lets you try out VR without making a big investment in hardware.
You can use Bluetooth 3.0 class 2 gamepads with your Oculus Go. To connect a gamepad to your Oculus Go: Turn on your Oculus Go and open the Oculus app on your phone. Tap Settings from the bottom menu.
This optional feature will apparently “allow app auto-launch” on Go headsets. That means users will be able to jump into gaze-only VR apps without having to use a controller to select them.
It's not possible to natively cast your Oculus Go display anywhere other than to a mobile device with the Oculus app.
Make sure the Oculus Quest, your iOS/Android device and Chromecast is on the same Wi-Fi network. From the Oculus home area, select the Sharing tab. On the left side select the Casting option. This will open your headset to any casting device you set on your phone.
Oculus currently supports the following connected devices for Quest casting — Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, NVIDIA Shield TV, and Google Home Hub. Chromecasts are simple HDMI dongles that allow you to “cast” video and music services like YouTube, Netflix, Spotify and now Oculus to your TV.
CES 2019: Samsung TV's Just Got Smarter With New Chromecast Type Feature. The concept is remarkable similar to Google Chromecast, you can browse for content on your Android phone or tablet, then “cast” that content to your Smart Samsung TV.
To start casting from the Oculus app:
- Open the Oculus app on your phone.
- Select from the top right of your screen.
- Under Cast From, select the headset you'd like to cast from.
- Under Cast To select This Phone.
- Tap Start at the bottom of your screen, put on your headset and accept the in-VR prompt to start casting.
For anyone interested, YES you can ScreenCast directly from Quest to Amazon FireTV. I'm using the Quest's 10.0+ firmware, 4K Firestick, and a FireTV app called "AirScreen - AirPlay & Google Cast & Miracast & DLNA" to get direct streaming from the Quest to the TV. Ensure you're on the latest Oculus Quest firmware.
