The Specific Gravity - SG - is a dimensionless unit defined as the ratio of density of the material to the density of water at a specified temperature. It is common to use the density of water at 4 oC (39 oF) as reference - at this point the density of water is at the highest.

Rock DensitiesRock density is very sensitive to the minerals that compose a particular rock type. Sedimentary rocks (and granite), which are rich in quartz and feldspar, tend to be less dense than volcanic rocks.

All minerals, however, can be classified into two main groups—silicate minerals and nonsilicate minerals—based on the chemical compositions of the minerals.

Long prismatic, acicular, or fibrous crystal habit, Mohs hardness between 5 and 6, and two directions of cleavage intersecting at approximately 56° and 124° generally suffice to identify amphiboles in hand specimens. The specific gravity values of amphiboles range from about 2.9 to 3.6.
What is the density of water?
Amphiboles crystallize into two crystal systems, monoclinic and orthorhombic. Most apparent, in hand specimens, is that amphiboles form oblique cleavage planes (at around 120 degrees), whereas pyroxenes have cleavage angles of approximately 90 degrees.
The average density of granite is between 2.65 and 2.75 g/cm3 (165 and 172 lb/cu ft), its compressive strength usually lies above 200 MPa, and its viscosity near STP is 3–6. 1020 Pa. s.
Unfortunately, Osmium forms a nasty compound, Osmium tetroxide , when exposed to air. Osmium Tetroxide is toxic, volatile, water soluble, and really wants to kill you. Don't do it.
Osmium tetroxide is expensive because osmium is a rare element. Osmium is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust. Osmium is obtained as a by-product from nickel and copper processing. The US production of Os is probably only about 75 kg/year.
Funnily enough, Os is considered as a platinum group metal. Additionally it is much rarer than gold, about 1000 times. Osmium is still not as expensive as Gold, being around $400 USD per ounce compared $1,300 USD per ounce.
Sources of osmiumOsmium is produced as a by-product of nickel refining. The element occurs in the mineral iridosule and in platinum-bearing river sands in the Urals, North America and South America. While there is little osmium in these products, it can be easily obtained from processed nickel ores.
Streak, the colour of a mineral in its powdered form. It is usually obtained by rubbing the mineral on a hard, white surface, such as a tile of unglazed porcelain, so as to yield a line, or streak, of fine powder.
Osmium tetroxide, OsO4, is highly toxic. Concentrations in air as low as 10-7 g m-3 can cause lung congestion, skin damage, and severe eye damage. The oxide, in particular, should only ever be handled by a properly qualified chemist.
Ninety-nine percent of all rocks on earth are denser than water at ambient temperatures (the water is liquid) and therefore those rocks will sink in water. One rock type is lighter (due to trapped air bubbles) and will float. This rock is a volcanic (extrusive) rock known as 'pumice'.
