How often to change oil. According to research by Edmunds, most carmakers now recommend oil changes between 7,500 and 10,000 miles, although some specify 5,000-mile intervals. The type of engine oil, the age and make of your vehicle and driving habits dictate when to change engine oil.
Every Toyota model has recommended, scheduled maintenance that should be performed at 5,000 miles or 6 months, 15,000 miles or 18 months and 30,000 miles or 36 month intervals.
According to Angie's List pricing data based on recent member reviews, the national average for a basic oil change using conventional oil is $46. The minimum price was $25, with $50 being the most expensive. According to Cost Helper, an oil change typically costs $20 to $55.
The 2006 Toyota Corolla is available with two versions of its 1.8L inline-4 engine. The 1.8L with engine code [R] 1ZZ-FE 3 has an oil capacity of 4.4 quarts and the one with the code of 2ZZ-GE B needs 4.6 quarts of oil. Both use 5W30 weighted synthetic formulated oil.
“If you're using full synthetic oil, we recommend going about 7,500 between changes,” says Leo Jay of Dere Auto in Seattle. Bell says that with synthetic oil and some manufacturers, intervals between oil changes can be much, much longer: "In some cases as much as 15,000 miles or one year."
Car manufacturers often suggest changing oil filters every other time you have your oil changed. Most parts and oil manufacturers, however, say to replace oil filters with every oil change, which should occur every 3,000 miles or three months (whichever comes first).
Steps for changing your oil
- Check the type and amount of oil needed.
- Get together your filter, wrenches, and other supplies.
- Prepare your vehicle.
- Locate the oil filter and drain plug.
- Drain the oil.
- Tighten the drain plug.
- Change the oil filter.
- Add the new oil.
How to Reset the Maintenance Light on Toyota Corolla
- Place the key in the ignition, and turn it to the “On” position.
- Press the trip reset button and hold it until you see “Trip A” on the display.
- Return the key to the “Off” position.
- Hold down the trip reset button, and turn the key back to the “On” position.
Most engines require anywhere between 5 to 8 quarts of oil, depending on the engine size. The smaller the engine, the less oil required to fill the volume of the engine. A 4-cylinder engine usually requires around 5 quarts of oil. A 6-cylinder engine uses roughly 6 quarts.
The carmakers usually specify a 5W-20 or 5W-30 oil, particularly for lower temperatures, with a 10W-30 oil as optional, particularly for higher ambient temperatures. When you pour it into the engine, 5W20 oil will create less friction owing to its thinner viscosity, which means it results in less drag throughout the engine parts, such as pistons, valve train, and crankshaft.
However, the lower viscosity version, 5w20, is also recommended by many vehicle manufacturers. 5w20 can provide better protection in climates with lower temperatures as the lower viscosity will improve oil movement in freezing conditions.
Rebecca C. responded: The 2010 Toyota Corolla has an engine oil capacity (with filter change) of 4.4 qt for the 1.8L engines and 4.0 qt for the 2.4L engines.
The reason 5W-30 and 5W-20 motor oils are so common is because they work very well with a wide range of engines. Most often, these types of oils best cover the range of possible temperatures, with a 5W-20 oil more geared toward colder climates and a 5W-30 oil more appropriate for warmer temperature extremes.
The 2009 Corolla requires 4.5 quarts of 100 percent synthetic 0W-20 motor oil for maximum performance. It requires 5W-20 OE for normal performance. The oil filter typically needs to be replaced every 25,000 miles. The oil drain plug is torqued to between 27 and 29 ft-lbs.
The 2007 Toyota Corolla requires 4.5 quarts of motor oil. Under all temperature conditions, 5W-30 weight oil is required.
