You want to spend 2-3 days in RMNP. Estes is your best option. The east side of the park is far more scenic than the west side, so don't spend your time in Grand Lake please. If you want to drive all the way to the west side as a day trip utilizing Trail Ridge Road, go for it, just don't use Grand Lake as your base.
While the Overlook itself is fantasy, it's based on a real-life hotel in Colorado, represented in the film by a ski resort in Oregon, and modeled inside after a lodge in Yosemite National Park, all of which you can still stay at.
Currently there is a $35 per vehicle entrance fee which is good for 7 days. The Annual Park Pass is currently $70, so if you're coming more than once, it pays for itself. The park has a “Day Use Pass” valid for one day only and costs $25.

A real western feel, nice people, and beautiful scenery. Estes was also beautiful, a little touristy, but worthwhile, especially if your goal is to see Rocky Mountain National Park.

Re: Denver to Estes - Will the drive scare me? Denver to Estes isn't bad, but if you're planning on going into Rocky Mountain National Park, you might find Trail Ridge Road nerve-wracking.

A timed entry permit or camping reservation is required to enter ALL areas of Rocky Mountain National Park—including Trail Ridge Road (US Hwy 34)—in a private vehicle between the hours of 6 am and 5 pm.
Equally picturesque, Trail Ridge Road (U.S. Highway 34) provides entry to Estes Park (elevation 7,522) from the west, notably from Granby and Grand Lake. The road usually opens Memorial Day weekend; snow forces its closure by early to mid-October.
