There are two major systems of units used in the world: SI units (also known as the metric system) and English units (also known as the customary or imperial system).
A measurement always has two parts: a number and a unit. Standard units include: inches, feet, yards, centimeters, meters, teaspoons, cups, gallons, pounds, minutes, etc. Nonstandard units include: paper clips, bricks, frogs, marbles, pencils, toes, etc.
We measure small objects, such as a book or tablet, with small units, such as inches (standard unit) or counting cubes (nonstandard unit). For larger objects, such as a room or a garden, we use larger units, such as feet (standard unit) or our footsteps.
Standard units are the units we usually use to measure the weight, length or capacity of objects.
The seven SI base units, which are comprised of:
- Length - meter (m)
- Time - second (s)
- Amount of substance - mole (mole)
- Electric current - ampere (A)
- Temperature - kelvin (K)
- Luminous intensity - candela (cd)
- Mass - kilogram (kg)
The principal advantage of using non-standard units of measure is that it might make measurements simpler in certain specified circumstances. The principal disadvantages are: When you are communicating your measurements to somebody else, you need to be careful to ensure that they understand your units of measure.
If we use non - standard units then we may not be able to express our measurement internationally as mainly standard units are used and accepted internationally. The non- standard units do not have the same dimensions all over the world.
What is the difference between length and distance? Length is the measurement of something, such as a segment or the dimensions of a room. Distance is how far apart objects are, such as two cities or two points. Neither length nor distance will ever be a negative value.

Standard languages arise when a certain dialect begins to be used in written form, normally throughout a broader area than that of the dialect itself. The ways in which this language is used—e.g., in administrative matters, literature, and economic life—lead to the minimization of linguistic variation.
Standard english has distinctive features of grammar, vocabulary and orthography (spelling&punctuation) but not of pronunciation. This is because it can be spoken with any accent. It is the most prestigious variety of English, associated with people of high social status.
Slangedit. One form of non-standard language is slang. In certain regions, certain dialects may have this non-standard language incorporated into “normal” speech.
Standardization, it is argued, is necessary in order to facilitate communications, to make possible the establishment of an agreed orthography, and to provide a uniform form for school books.
