American and Delta were the world's largest airlines in 2019. At the same time, Delta generated the most revenue — overtaking American by more than $1 billion — followed by American and United. Delta generated $47 billion in operating revenue in 2019, American $45.8 billion and United $43.3 billion.
The world's fastest growing airlines in 2018 have been revealed, with a Thai low cost carrier coming out on top. The research, compiled by Routesonline, said Thai Lion Air had grown its seat capacity faster than any other airline in the world after increasing its fleet and adding new destinations to its network.

The USA used to have an unofficial flag carrier, Pan American World Airways, from 1927.

Pan American World Airways, or "Pan Am," was principal international air carrier of the United States for most of its lifetime—first flying mail between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba, in 1927. After selling most of its international routes to raise operating funds, Pan Am ended in bankruptcy in December 1991.
National had a history going back to 1934, when it used a fleet of two Ryan monoplanes to move passengers and mail around Florida. Eventually, National's story ended like so many airline stories do today: It was bought by another airline. In 1980, National was acquired by Pan American World Airways.
