Photographic Cameras - 1838We all have a camera in todays modern world but in the Victorian period cameras were only just being invented. The very first photograph taken (although only partially successful) was done so by Nicéphore Niépce in 1816. He did this with a small camera he had made himself.

Agnes Marshall patented a zinc-lined machine which promised to freeze ice cream in just 3 minutes! Around the central pewter jar the cook would put a mix of ice and salt.

Thomas EdisonEasily one of the most famous inventors in the Victorian times. He was a renowned American scientist and inventor who was responsible for inventing and developing many amazing devices that have greatly influenced the world we live in today.
1842: The adjustable spanner invented by Edwin Beard Budding (1796–1846).
Rich people could afford lots of treats like holidays, fancy clothes, and even telephones when they were invented. Poor people – even children – had to work hard in factories, mines or workhouses. They didn't get paid very much money. By the end of the Victorian era, all children could go to school for free.

The first cars appeared during the Victorian times, but only rich people could afford them. Early car drivers were required to have a special attendant walking in front of the car, holding a red flag as a warning. The German engineer Karl Benz built the first motorcar in 1885.
There were no cars or aeroplanes. Instead stagecoaches were used for long-distance travel between major towns. Wealthier people could afford to buy their own horse-drawn carriages. In towns people travelled in horse-drawn buses.
The Victorian era also marks a time of great economic growth, technological discovery, and industrialization. Also during the Victorian Era, the influence of literature became more prevalent in society as reading evolved into a social pastime indicated by the increasing literacy rate.
The Victorian era was a remarkably fertile period for the adoption, expansion, and transformation of technology. Photography, telegraphy, telephony, steamships, railways, electric lighting, and industrial control engineering are only a few of the many complex systems and processes developed during the era.

Ice cream was made by pouring cream into the metal cylinder and filling the space between the cylinder and the bucket with ice and salt. Ice and salt react together to lower the temperature below freezing. The cream was moved around by turning the handle so that it froze evenly.
Common Crime in Victorian EnglandPickpocketing was by far one of the most common types of crime, but there were other issues that dogged society far more than the ruthless and savage tales being published in the papers. Women were most likely to be convicted of crimes such as prostitution and soliciting.
People died early and often, and the Victorians embraced these morbid manifestations of grief. This period was also fascinated with ghosts and Spiritualism. Ghost stories were very popular at the time, as were seances in which people supposedly communed with the dead.
Victorian means belonging to, connected with, or typical of Britain in the middle and last parts of the 19th century, when Victoria was Queen. You can use Victorian to describe people who have old-fashioned attitudes, especially about good behavior and morals.
Victorian life could be busy but Victorians liked to make good use of their leisure time by playing games and sports and going on day trips and holidays. The ways in which people could entertain themselves varied depending on whether they were rich or poor, male or female.
Rich Victorians always had servants. Cooks, butlers, gardeners, housemaids, nannies and governesses were employed by this social class. The middle class families did not usually have as many servants as the upper class families.

1) The Victorians were the people who lived during the reign of Queen Victoria, from the 20 June 1837 until the date of her death on the 22 January 1901. It was an era of exciting discoveries, inventions and exploration following the Industrial Revolution.

The Victorians, especially poor ones, were at high risk of catching some nasty diseases. Most of the common killers – measles, scarlet fever, smallpox and typhus – had blighted Britain for centuries. Around one-third of children, and more than half in some poor neighbourhoods, died before they reached the age of five.
