Heart failure is the pathophysiologic state in which the heart, via an abnormality of cardiac function (detectable or not), fails to pump blood at a rate commensurate with the requirements of the metabolizing tissues or is able to do so only with an elevated diastolic filling pressure.
Also called systolic heart failure, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction is the most common type of heart failure. It occurs when the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber, weakens and can't pump blood effectively. This condition is also often called dilated cardiomyopathy.

The body's hormone and nervous systems try to make up for this by increasing blood pressure, holding on to salt (sodium) and water in the body, and increasing heart rate. These responses are the body's attempt to compensate for the poor blood circulation and backup of blood.
Arterial vasoconstriction increases systemic vascular resistance which raises arterial pressure. In heart failure, particularly when cardiac output is significantly reduced, arterial vasoconstriction helps to maintain arterial pressure.
The sympathetic nervous system is activated in heart failure, via low and high pressure baroreceptors, as an early compensatory mechanism which provides inotropic support and maintains cardiac output.
Compensated heart failure means your heart works well enough that you either don't notice any problems or the symptoms are easy to manage. You don't have fluid buildup in your legs and feet, and you can breathe without trouble. Your body still seems to be doing OK, even with the change in your heart's pumping ability.

The failing heart's impaired systolic or diastolic function is accompanied by a reduction in cardiac output and pari passu renal blood flow, causing the kidneys to initiate a homeostatic hormonal response comparable to that found when intravascular volume is contracted due to salt and water deprivation or fluid loss.
Left-sided heart failure occurs when the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping power source, is gradually weakened. When this occurs, the heart is unable to pump oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the heart's left atrium, into the left ventricle and on through the body and the heart has to work harder.
Stage 3 of Congestive Heart FailureSmall bouts of exercise or minimal doses of physical activity will cause the same symptoms mentioned in stage two – fatigue, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations. In stage three, lifestyle changes are not as effective, and a surgical procedure may be necessary.
The symptoms of end-stage congestive heart failure include dyspnea, chronic cough or wheezing, edema, nausea or lack of appetite, a high heart rate, and confusion or impaired thinking.
Although heart failure is a serious condition that progressively gets worse over time, certain cases can be reversed with treatment. Even when the heart muscle is impaired, there are a number of treatments that can relieve symptoms and stop or slow the gradual worsening of the condition.
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF or heart failure): A condition where the heart muscle weakens and can't pump blood efficiently throughout the body, causing the body to hold onto salt and fluids.
As heart failure gets worse, fluid starts to build up in your lungs and other parts of your body. This may cause you to: Feel short of breath even at rest. Have swelling (edema), especially in your legs, ankles, and feet.
While most people associate coughing as a common symptom that accompanies lung or respiratory issues, its connection to heart failure often goes unnoticed. This is called a cardiac cough, and it often happens to those with congestive heart failure (CHF).
Lifestyle changes you can make to help prevent heart failure include:
- Not smoking.
- Controlling certain conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
- Staying physically active.
- Eating healthy foods.
- Maintaining a healthy weight.
- Reducing and managing stress.
Weight gain or swelling (edema) of the feet, ankles, legs, abdomen, or neck veins. Tiredness, weakness. Lack of appetite, nausea. Thinking difficulties, confusion, memory loss, feelings of disorientation.
