The Wii U was likely a failure because of a confluence of issues. When the Wii U launched in 2012, Nintendo had become convinced that anything bearing the Wii's name would sell. But because the Wii was at the end of its lifecycle, people looked at the Wii U as a rehash and didn't buy it.
(Pocket-lint) - Nintendo has confirmed that after The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is released, the Nintendo Wii U will be effectively dead. There will be no more first-party development for the console. It's all Switch or nothing for future Nintendo games.
Nintendo has announced it will shutdown the limited eShops for the Wii U and 3DS family of systems in certain Latin American and Caribbean countries by 31st July 2020. Also, any software that requires the limited Nintendo eShops to operate may cease to function. (Note that Mexico and Brazil will not be affected.)

Overall, if the VC and true exclusives sound good or if the ports without much content are a bit steep in price and the portability isn't a big selling factor, it may be worth it. Otherwise, it's really not. I have a Switch and I just got a used Wii U a couple weeks ago.
If you want to play Wii and Wii U games with the added benefit of native HDMI, get a Wii U. Keep in mind that Wii U's can't play GameCube games without being modded. If it were me, I'd buy the Wii because a bunch of Wii U games got Switch ports. Some of their games are actually pretty good, it can play wii, and has VC.
Also, you can't play online or the story without the gamepad as it's needed to rev up specials and also displays the map. Pro controller is only used for player 2 in a local multiplayer mode.
YouTube has pulled its plug for supporting the Wii U browser. So now, if you try to access the website in-browser, it will result in an error message. The official YouTube app on Wii U is still alive (for now), though you are limited to only being able to watch YouTube and do nothing else.

Nintendo will begin the next phase of shutting down the Wii virtual console today. For the time being, you can still download the classic titles purchased in the virtual console. However, those titles will no longer work at some unannounced future date, and there's no way to back them up.
Yes, the original Wii has been discontinued. Due to the release of the Wii U, and now the Switch, Nintendo no longer has a need to continue manufacturing the Wii. Especially because no video game developers will invest time and money into creating a game for the Wii.
Yes. Wii is Wi-Fi-enabled, meaning it can connect to a wireless access point (such as a wireless router) to connect to the Internet.
To check your system version, open the Wii System Settings by clicking the round Wii button in the lower-left corner of the System Menu. Look in the upper-right corner and you'll see your version number. If it's any version less than 4.3, then you can either try another exploit or update your Wii now.
A total of 103.10 million Wii U games have been sold worldwide since March 31, 2019, with ten games surpassing the million-unit mark. The highest selling game is Mario Kart 8 at 8.45 million units, followed by Super Mario 3D World at 5.84 million units, and New Super Mario Bros. U at 5.80 million units.
The Wii U went out of production about six months before the Switch launched and Nintendo did a buyback of unsold inventory from most retailers. So new units are difficult to find. Mine sold on EBay for 495. Used that money to buy a Switch and games.
The Switch is roughly as powerful as the Wii U — a little speedier, sure, but they're not in different galaxies. Both systems are also built around 6.2-inch touchscreens. Again, the Switch's is better, but the concept is similar.
Expect to pay between $80 and $230, depending on model and condition. The following table compares recent prices for a used Wii U in “good” condition. * Prices for Nintendo Wii U models in “good” condition.
Nintendo no longer produces the Wii U, making unopened boxes shoot up in price. There are some strong games in its lineup, but considering the still-high costs, you may want to consider a Nintendo Switch bundle instead.
Nintendo's CEO Shuntaro Furukawa has said that there are "no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020" which is a fairly clear cut statement. That means we're pretty much in the dark about when a Nintendo Switch 2 might arrive but we're hoping for a release date sometime next year.
Not all Switch consoles can be hacked. The exploit is hardware-based, which means future versions of the Tegra X2 used in the Switch were patched.
Since the Switch is a computer, it can be hacked. Yes, the Patched Switch has been cracked by the Xecuter team. The latest news is that the product Modchip SX Core will be officially launched in May 2020.
The Nintendo Switch console must be connected online to download a system update. In most situations, the Nintendo Switch will automatically download the most recent system update. If you are unable to perform the system update, restart your console and try again. Select the "System Settings" on the HOME Menu.
The Nintendo Switch Linux OS is used for the “under the hood” aspects of the console, as there is little resemblance to the desktop operating system. The Switch also uses Webkit for its Internet browser — another open source platform used by Google Chrome and Apple's Safari browser.
As a device running the Nvidia Tegra X1 SoC, the Nintendo Switch is a close cousin to two Android devices, the Nvidia Shield TV, a set-top box that runs Android TV, and the Google Pixel C, Google's last (ever?) Android tablet.
The only way I could find to tell the hardware apart is the model number stamped on the back. The original reads "HAC-001," while V2 is "HAC-001 (-01)." But there's also an easier way to tell the difference -- the V2 Switch comes in a box with a red background on its front panel.
