Topography: Libya has narrow enclaves of fertile lowlands along its Mediterranean coast and a vast expanse of arid, rocky plains and sand seas to the south. Coastal lowlands are separated from one another by a predesert zone and backed by plateaus with steep, north-facing scarps.
The Qattara Depression is a treacherous lowland covering 7,500 square miles in area near the Egyptian-Libyan border. It's shaped roughly like a huge footprint, as if a giant had stepped from the Mediterranean into the Sahara, and left a big squishy mess. (“Qattara,†appropriately, is Arabic for “dripping.â€)

Libya can be broadly classified in two major climate zones: 1) desert or arid areas which represent the largest area of the country (more than 95% of total surface area) but have very low population densities, and 2) Mediterranean areas that concentrate the vast majority of urban areas and crop land.
Libya has a northern coast along the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean is an almost completely landlocked sea that lies between southern Europe, north Africa, and southwest Asia.

Rainfall in Libya occurs during the winter months, with average annual rainfall of 26 mm and great variations from place to place and from year to year. Approximately 93% of the land surface receives less than 100 mm of rain per year.
The official language in Libya is Arabic. Arabic is written in a standard form throughout the Arab world. This form, known as Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), is used for official written purposes in Libya. However, the spoken Arabic varies considerably from the written form.
Libya's only large and reliable river is a pipeline. Great Man-Made River (GMR) is a well field that mines drinking and irrigation water from non-rechargeable aquifers that underlay much of North Africa.
Its culture involves roots in Berber, African, Turkish and Arab cultures. Libya was also an Italian colony for about three decades, which had a great impact on the culture. Libya has managed to keep its traditional folk culture alive to today. The majority of Libyans are Arab, and 96.6% are Muslim Sunnis.
Because Libya is ninety percent desert or semi desert, the climate there does not vary much across the country. Most of Libya has an arid, desert climate year-round.
Libya is very lightly forested, with less than 1 percent forest and woodland cover. Forests cover 400 000 ha (0.2 percent of land area), and other wooded land 446 000 ha (0.3 percent). Most of this land is covered with scrub and minor vegetation. For commercial purposes, the country has no forests.
These oil revenues and a small population have given Libya one of the highest nominal per capita GDP in Africa.
