There are some really powerful benefits to taking up a musical instrument at any age. In Jazz, this is often called “vocalese” or “scatting”. The idea is to produce the sounds similar to a musical instrument; to improvise as do the regular musicians.
Depends on your style. The trumpet will be easier on the wallet, but the sax is easier to pick up and play. For either one I suggest taking lessons for a couple of months in order to help you understand the fundamentals more. If you choose a sax, pick up a cheap alto or tenor first.
So, in comparison to the flute or saxophone, the trumpet isn't particularly difficult in terms of breath control, but in comparison to percussion, piano, or guitar, it is a factor that makes learning the trumpet all that more difficult.
The sax is far more accessible than the trumpet; you don't need to build the same embouchure with lips and cheeks, the fingering is linear and easy to understand, and you can play the sax much quicker than the trumpet as a beginner. But if you love the sound of the trumpet, that's what you should do.
Generally speaking, most new saxophone students start off learning on either the alto or tenor. They are the easiest. The soprano and baritone saxophones have a few more issues that a beginner will face. Although the soprano is smaller than the others, it is very difficult to play in tune.
However, with a reasonable amount of allocated practise time and enthusiasm most people should within a few years (2 -4) be able to read simple melodies with ease, improvise neat diatonic lines and play comfortably with others in an ensemble, which for most will mean many years of enjoyment.
The trombone is bulkier, making it a little more difficult to play than the trumpet, especially for those who have never played a brass instrument before. Behind the cornet, the trumpet is the smallest of all brass instruments, making it easier to hold, play, and transport to and from lessons.
Since the alto sax is smaller, its notes are higher and brighter than those of the tenor sax. While expert musicians can get a vast range of sounds out of both instruments, younger musicians who have smaller hands and a smaller lung capacity tend to have an easier time playing the alto sax.
Trumpets are not an easy instrument to learn initially and are one of the difficult instruments to learn, but with lots of time and practice, they can be mastered. It requires an immense amount of daily practice so you can build up the lung power required to play the instrument properly.
