- Step #1: Take one sheet of paper. You may use more than one sheet of paper if you want to make a bigger fan.

Since fans don't actually cool the air, the air currents flowing over the body must be cooler than your skin to control core body temperature. When air temperatures reach 95 degrees, fans can actually make you hotter! Fans make it even more difficult for the body to lose heat by sweating.
The origin of hand fans can be traced as far back as 4,000 years ago in Egypt. The fan was seen as a sacred instrument and used in religious ceremonies and was also seen as a symbol of power royalty even in this early form, as evidenced by the two elaborate fans found in King Tut's tomb.
Japanese hand fans were originally used by the Samurai class and Japanese aristocrats. They were initially used as a form of material to write on to communicate messages, as an instructive tool to educate, a symbol of status, and even as a weapon.
Stiff circular fans and feather fans were introduced from China to Japan in about the 6th Century. Traditionally, the folding fan was a Japanese invention that was introduced into China during the Sung dynasty (960-1279 AD).
Perhaps the most enduring role of the handheld fan is as the symbol of wealth or royalty, which stretches as far back as the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Babylon and continues even to this day. In western culture, fans were commonly associated with the sophistication of the upper classes.
The word originally pertained to a temple or sacred place [Latin fanum, poetic English fane]. The modern sense of "extremely zealous" dates from around 1647; the use of fanatic as a noun dates from 1650. He called the fanatics filling his stands "fans".
Steps
- Hold the fan in your hand in a closed position. Make sure the part that will slide open is facing downwards.
- Flick your wrist with enough force.
- Move your hand up to cover your face and flutter it swiftly and gently.
- Avoid fluttering it hard; it's not the purpose of using a fan.
A hand held fan can “cool” the user just as any fan can “cool". I put cool in quote marks because in reality no fan can actually cool in the sense that it can lower the air temperature. All fans can do, whether hand held or other, is move the air around it and at whatever temperature the air happens to be.
