Ironing and pressing are often used interchangeably, but are actually two separate techniques. Ironing is the back and forth sliding motion most of us are familiar with and do regularly at home. Pressing is the placing of the iron on the fabric, holding it there, and then removing.
Here's how to do it:
- Remove your linens from the dryer before they're fully dry. Ideally, cotton linens will be slightly damp to the touch.
- Spray each piece with starch.
- Fold the sheets lengthwise into quarters.
- Iron on high heat.
- Don't skip the pillow cases.
- Smooth and tuck.
Bring a section of the sheet forward onto the pressing bed. Next, lower the handle to half way – this will bring the steam function into action. Let the steam penetrate the fabric for about 5 seconds. Lower the handle fully and press away.
Steam irons for crisp and wrinkle-free clothesA steam iron aids you in maintaining your clothes and also promises you a safe experience. Styling yourself in neat and wrinkle-free clothes is a crucial part of dressing up for work.
To Steam or Not to Steam? Steaming is the ideal way to finish delicate fabrics such as silk and silk-like synthetics, which cannot stand up to the intense, direct heat of an iron. Similarly, wool, cashmere, and wool-like synthetics should be steamed after washing to smooth any wrinkles and fluff the yarns.
Generally, garment steamers won't completely replace a iron though. Some fabrics, like organza, cotton or denim need a proper iron to get all the creases out, while other fabrics like poly-cotton and wool might simply need a hot iron to get them to their best.
Instead of washing your jeans, give them a quick steam. It will not only smooth out some of the creases, but will help get rid of any unsavory scents.
"Putting the iron directly on the fabric might burn an item, but if you just give it some blasts of steam, it won't cause any damage," says Briganti. Hitting them with steam will also prolong the time before you need to go to the cleaner or handwash.
Steam opens up your pores and helps loosen any buildup of dirt for a deeper cleanse. Opening up your pores also softens blackheads, making them easier to remove. It promotes circulation. The combination of warm steam and an increase in perspiration dilates your blood vessels and increases circulation.
Smaller steamers are easier to pack and carry but often lack the power to take on heavy wrinkles. Shoppers should look for a machine that is reasonably compact, while offering a strong, hot and continuous steam stream. That probably means power in the 800-watt range but that varies by manufacturer.
Steamers are much faster than irons. Handheld garment steamers beat irons in terms of convenience because they are lightweight and require little space. A disadvantage with a steamer is that creases cannot be pressed into fabrics. Your dress shirt won't look crisp if you use a steamer.
Place the garment in the dryer, preferably with a damp, but not soaking wet, towel. This will create steam and release the wrinkles. A washcloth can also work, especially if you are trying to remove wrinkles from just one small item. Put the dryer on a high setting for five to 10 minutes.
While not a replacement for an iron, this steamer is a must for every household. The steam output is hot enough to smooth over wrinkles and fold marks, which are especially useful for clothes which you may have worn once but are still not dirty enough to deserve a place in your laundry basket.
Steamers lock in flavour and nutrients as they gently cook vegetables, rice and fish. Good steamers include a rice bowl and can produce particularly well-cooked, fluffy rice. Using multiple baskets, it's possible to steam an entire meal, and it's more energy efficient than using the oven and hob.
