Dubbed 'Scotland's favourite pint', Tennent's is the best-selling lager north of the border – and it is stunningly mediocre. Insipid in colour, uninspiring in taste, it's the type of beer that tastes more of tomorrow's headache than yesterday's hops harvest.
That's why Tennent's is getting ready to cheer up misled Carling drinkers with a taste of Honest T. By bringing a can of Carling to select bars throughout Scotland, people can swap their lesser beer for a 'Refreshingly Accurate' 4 per cent ABV pint of Scotland's favourite, Tennent's Lager.
Wellpark was redeveloped between 1965 and 1968 but Heriot was demolished in the 1990s. In 1967, Charringtons merged with Bass to form the Bass Charrington Group. It was later bought by the Belgian brewer Interbrew (now InBev) in June 2000, which became part of Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2008.
Tennent's 1885 Lager
A pilsner-style lager with personality. Hearty, malty flavours and just the right amount of fruitiness, hops and bitterness. Now Special Brew - which at 9% ABV contains 4.5 units of alcohol per can - will become less potent in 2015. Brewer Carlsberg says that it will sign up to a UK government-led pledge that no drink should contain more than four units, a man's maximum recommended daily intake.
Tennent's Lager is Scotland's best-selling pale lager, with approximately 60% of the Scottish lager market. The brand's super strength lager, Tennent's Super (9% ABV), is no longer produced by Wellpark and is produced in Luton by Inbev, who kept the brand after the sale of Wellpark to C&C.
The maniacs. And while Italians who come to Glasgow might be surprised that they don't see people in the city's bars and restaurants clutching a Tennent's Super, there's at least one Italian who is happy not to. "I think it is very popular in Italy because it allows us to forget about mafia and pineapple on pizza".
OUR PROCESS. Our beers are crafted in Scotland honouring the Tennent's family's original recipes since 1556. The base ingredients for our beers are simple and genuine, and they haven't changed a bit: malted barley, hops, yeast and water. The flour is then mashed with hot water to convert starch to fermentable sugar.
Who owns Tennents brewery?
Tennent's Lager was introduced to Scotland by 21 year old Hugh Tennent. Hugh and Robert Tennent then founded the current brewery in 1740, before Hugh's descendant (who was also named Hugh) introduced Tennent's lager in 1885, it later became the first lager to be produced in the UK on a commercial scale.
They do not contain any animal ingredient nor are there any animal products used in the production of the lager. It is brewed and packaged in our Tennents plant in Glasgow and nowhere else. "The Vegetarian Society has confirmed that Tennents is suitable for vegetarians.
Carlsberg Special Brew is a rich malty, strong lager. First produced in 1950 to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill's visit to Copenhagen, Special Brew has Cognac notes to reflect Churchill's favourite tipple. It is full bodied, with a distinct bitterness.
TWO models who found fame as Tennent's “Lager Lovelies” are championing a comeback — on a set of retro tins. Natalie Walker and June Lake want to recreate their iconic poses from the sides of booze cans in the 1980s. Tennent's lovelies were part of the winning formula in the 80s.
Drygate Brewing Company a joint venture between Tennents lager owner C&C Group and craft brewers Williams Bros Brewing Co, is aiming to brew up to a million litres of craft beer in its first full year of trading.
All of the draught beers (except Best Scotch) were brewed at the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh, whilst the canned and bottled beers were produced at the Eagle Brewery in Bedford, England. The beers are sold predominantly in Scotland and the North East of England.
Light beers are lagers. Darker beers are called heavy. You can ask for a pint of lager or a pint of heavy or you can just say the name on the beer tap. Local Scottish brews are Tennants and McEwans, but you can get many imported ones, too.
