44 years ago, on January 23, 1973, a previously-unknown fissure in the Earth beneath the small Icelandic island of Heimaey opened up less than a mile from the town of Vestmannaeyjar, which had a population of about 5,000 at the time.

Surtsey is a small island lying 32 km from the mainland , the most remote of a chain of islands off the southwest coast of Iceland. Surtsey volcano emerged from the sea in November 1963, remaining active until mid-1967.

Most people base themselves out of Reykjavik to drive the Golden Circle, as it's a great day trip that can have you back in the city by evening to experience some of Iceland's famous nightlife. But if you plan to continue to the Ring Road, the town of Selfoss is a good place to spend the night.

Heimaey Island can be reached by ferry or commercial airline service. Eimskip operates the passenger ferry Herjolfur which can accommodate 500 passengers and 60 cars. The ferry departs from Porlakshofn which is about 1 hr Southeast of Reykjavik by car or bus.
The Elephant Rock can be visited by those who rent a car or take a Westman Islands tour, then take a ferry from Landeyjahöfn or Þórlakshöfn to the Westman Islands. Here, they will need to take a one-hour boat trip to see it.
