one dimension that is greater than 6-1/8 inches high OR 11-½ inches long OR ¼ inch thick. Be no more than 12 inches high x 15 inches long x ¾ inch thick.

If you are mailing overstuffed letters or home-made cards, be aware there is a limitation on the thickness of the envelope. Not only can these make your letter thickness uneven, they can cause a paper envelope to tear and drop its contents and are therefore sometimes considered unmailable.
When a First-Class Mail item exceeds any one of the maximum measurements of a large envelope, it is classified and priced as a package (parcel). When a flat-size piece of mail is a box or has contents that make the mailpiece rigid, it is classified and priced as a package.
