A: Babies grow tremendously in the later stages of pregnancy -- they usually double in size between 28 weeks and the time they're born.
This is a simple procedure, in which a thin ultrasound probe with a sterile cover is gently inserted into the vagina to provide detailed pictures of the inside of the uterus. Occasionally a Fetal Viability Scan may be inconclusive, especially if the gestational age is less than 6 weeks.
Now that you're 24 weeks pregnant, you're six months pregnant.
The sixth month (weeks 21-24)
At the end of the month there are still 16 weeks until the birth (3 months, 2 days). At the beginning of the month the fetus is 18 weeks old and at the end of the month, 22 weeks old.Generally, your baby will be called an embryo from conception until the eighth week of development. After the eighth week, the baby will be called a fetus until it's born.

6 weeks into your pregnancy is also the earliest time you might be able to see a foetal heartbeat on the ultrasound monitor. Don't be alarmed if all you see on the ultrasound screen is a small, empty circle. It's still very early days and it's common for only a yolk sac to be visible.
Generally, from 6 ½ -7 weeks is the time when a heartbeat can be detected and viability can be assessed. A normal heartbeat at 6-7 weeks would be 90-110 beats per minute. The presence of an embryonic heartbeat is an assuring sign of the health of the pregnancy.
While most practitioners wait until at least 6 weeks to perform the first ultrasound, a gestational sac can be seen as early as 4 1/2 weeks after your last period; a heartbeat can be detected as early as 5 to 6 weeks (though it might not be detected that early in all cases).

It Is Too Early For the Gestational Sac to Be Visible

Around 5 weeks, the gestational sac is often the first thing that most transvaginal ultrasounds can detect. This is seen before a recognizable embryo can be seen. Within this time period, a yolk sac can be seen inside the gestational sac.If you suspect that you are expecting twins, you must be eager to find out the same. But twin pregnancy or multiple pregnancy can be detected only if the twins or multiple babies are present in their own separate sacs of placement. So, it may not be possible to detect twin pregnancy at the 5th week of pregnancy.
Not hearing a foetal heartbeat at 6 weeks is normal and there's no reason for worry. The gestational age of your pregnancy may also be inaccurate. Due to an irregular ovulation pattern or inaccurate estimate of your last menstrual cycle, you may not really be 6 weeks pregnant.
It's perfectly normal to worry about the health of your baby and your pregnancy at every stage. An ultrasound scan may not show much at 5 weeks, or even identify the pregnancy but there is an HCG blood test that can monitor your hormone levels to see if there's significant change.
This week, a sonographer can see your baby via ultrasound as a tiny white image tucked within the gestational sac. Your embryo now looks less like a ball and more like a curled tube. One end of it will eventually become your baby's head; the other, your baby's bottom.
