Straddling Coachella and Imperial counties, the Salton Sea covers a desert region south of Palm Springs and north of the Mexican border.
The Imperial Valley depends solely on the Colorado River for surface water supply. IID imports raw water from the Colorado River and distributes it primarily for agricultural use.
Doug Cox manages the dam for the Imperial Irrigation District. "This is the only source of water for the Imperial Valley," Cox says. "All the drinking water, all the agricultural water — this is it." Imperial Dam shunts water from the Colorado River 82 miles through a canal, across the desert to Imperial Valley Farms.
The main canal is 82 miles (132 km), with a total drop of 175 feet (53 m), a width of 150 feet (46 m) to 700 feet (210 m) and a depth of 7 feet (2.1 m) to 50 feet (15 m).
(See the intricate migration pathways birds take around the world.) But the Salton Sea is shrinking. Because of a host of reasons climate-related, agricultural, and political, less and less water ends up trickling into the lake each year, while the hot desert sun keeps evaporating its water away.
