Facebook Messenger isn't end-to-end encrypted by default.
Messenger's regular conversations are not end-to-end encrypted. Aside from text, Secret Conversations support photos, videos, and audio snippets.The company announced Friday that it built a new feature inside Messenger called “secret” messages, or private conversations that are end-to-end encrypted. These messages will be stored only on the sender's and recipient's devices, not on Facebook's servers like regular Messenger messages.
Facebook Messenger can now send SMS text messages. Facebook's mobile takeover strategy hit a new milestone Tuesday. "You will now have the choice to be able to send and receive your SMS/texts in Messenger and will not have go to different screens on your phone to communicate," Facebook said in a post.
To try it out, just open Messenger, tap on Settings (the person icon), select "SMS" from the list, and enable "Default SMS app." After doing so, you'll be able to view and respond to any SMS convos within Messenger. SMS messages will show up in purple while Messenger conversations will be blue.

Facebook wants to make the default messaging app on your Android device obsolete. The social network on Tuesday announced that Android users can now send and receive SMS (aka text) messages in Messenger. All messages are sent and received via SMS, so standard text messaging fees still apply.

To add a Reaction on Messenger, simply open a conversation, tap and hold a message and select your emoji of choice. To remove a Reaction, tap and hold the message and hit the emoji again.

The character limit for a single SMS message is 160 characters, however most modern phones and networks support concatenation and segment and rebuild messages up to 1600 characters. Messages not using GSM-7 encoding are limited to 67 characters.
