Cyber security is the practice of defending computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from malicious attacks. It's also known as information technology security or electronic information security. A compromised application could provide access to the data its designed to protect.
Now in its 17th year, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) continues to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity across our Nation, ensuring that all Americans have the resources they need to be safer and more secure online.
The theme for 2020 is 'Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart', helping to empower individuals and organizations to own their role in protecting their part of cyberspace.

When the first Cyber Security Awareness Month was observed in October of 2004, there was no Instagram, no iPhone, no Alexa.
While a career in cybersecurity can be stressful, it's also extremely rewarding. The responsibilities of a cybersecurity professional may vary, but the role can be simplified into one function: protect a company's data from being compromised by an attack.
According to CIO, cyber security professionals earn an average of $116,000 annually or $55.77 per hour, for instance, while PayScale estimates that the average salary for computer security specialists is around $74,000, with location as a major factor in pay structure.
Cyber security degrees tend to be more challenging than non-research type majors, such as programs in the humanities or business, but are usually not as difficult as degrees in research or lab intensive areas, such as science and engineering.
Cybersecurity as an overall industry has a very promising career outlook. It has low unemployment and in fact, many countries have a deficit of employees. This means if you are qualified you can expect to never go unemployed for an extended period of time as a cybersecurity professional.
You should consider a career in cyber security if…

- You like new challenges.
- You're methodical.
- You're a strong communicator.
Generally work a set schedule. Most work 40 hours per week. May work evenings or weekends to meet deadlines or solve problems. May travel to different companies within the city or nation if working as a consultant.
There are many places offering free training in cybersecurity and all of the related skills we mentioned above, from online education providers like Coursera, edx, Udemy and Cybrary, to programming challenges in platforms like Codewars, online hacking challenges and CTF (Capture the Flag) competitions.
Is cyber security boring? As a general rule, the lower level cyber security jobs can be quite boring as they are monotonous and repetitive. Many of these jobs end up with a high turnover in employees as people end up quitting these low level jobs as they become frustrated by the monotony.
Infosec professionals face occupational hazards such as long hours, high stress levels, and career frustration that can lead to mental health issues. The cybersecurity skills shortage is increasing, and it's having a negative effect on information security professionals and their organizations.
Security awareness is the knowledge and attitude members of an organization possess regarding the protection of the physical, and especially informational, assets of that organization.
Explanation. Impersonation- involves a hacker who pretends to be a valid user on the system.
Social engineering is the art of manipulating people so they give up confidential information. Criminals use social engineering tactics because it is usually easier to exploit your natural inclination to trust than it is to discover ways to hack your software.

A cyber attack is any attempt to gain unauthorized access to a computer, computing system or computer network with the intent to cause damage.
