A symbol that represents a speech sound is called a grapheme. In English, graphemes are the letters of our alphabet.
When individuals infer meaning behind a new word that they've never heard before, it is referred to as sound symbolism. Sound symbolism tells us that low-front vowels (ex. a in “bat”) connote greater size and more power, while high-front vowels (ex. i in “bit”) connote smaller size and less power.
These sounds are not as iconic as Cult Sounds, but signifying for certain genres or periods of popular music. These sounds are mostly recognizable as individual sounds, as for example the Stratocaster Guitar or the Tape Stop Effect, just to name two.
Universal sound symbolism may exist in the form of shared intuitions about sound-meaning associations, although this has yet to be adequately demonstrated. The evidence suggests, however, that these shared intuitions are not consistently reflected in natural languages.
Although there is substantial debate in the language sciences over how to best characterize the features of spoken language, there is nonetheless a general consensus that the relationship between sound and meaning is largely arbitrary (1–3). Plenty of exceptions exist, however, within individual languages.
Note that the 44 sounds (phonemes) have multiple spellings (graphemes) and only the most common ones have been provided in this summary.

Decoding words, or sounding them out, is the ability to apply existing knowledge of letter-sound relationships to correctly pronounce printed words. Many children develop the ability to decode words over time with regular reading practice. But children may also benefit from explicit instruction.
A consonant is a speech sound that is not a vowel. It also refers to letters of the alphabet that represent those sounds: Z, B, T, G, and H are all consonants. Consonants are all the non-vowel sounds, or their corresponding letters: A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y are not consonants. In hat, H and T are consonants.

Fluent readers read aloud effortlessly and with expression. Readers who have not yet developed fluency read slowly, word by word. Their oral reading is choppy. Because fluent readers do not have to concentrate on decoding the words, they can focus their attention on what the text means.
The alphabetic principle is the understanding that there are systematic and predictable relationships between written letters and spoken sounds. Phonics instruction helps children learn the relationships between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language.
Vocabulary refers to the words we must understand to communicate effectively. A reader cannot understand a text without knowing what most of the words mean. Students learn the meanings of most words indirectly, through everyday experiences with oral and written language.
