If your employer pays for marijuana screening via urinalysis, it is highly likely that individuals who fail the test will lose their job. Likewise, those who apply for a role and test positive will not be employed by that company.
It usually only takes a few days to receive results from a workplace drug test. An employer may even request a rapid test, which can provide results the same day. Employers receive negative test results within 24 hours. Non-negative results take more time because of the additional testing required.
If the test results in a positive reading, meaning there is drug residue in the body, the results are forwarded to a medical review officer, who reviews the results and looks for any possible valid medical explanation for the results.
Ways to beat a drug test
- Substitution. To avoid a positive result, test-takers substitute their urine with synthetic urine or drug-free urine from another person or an animal.
- Dilution. Dilution of urine samples takes many forms.
- Adulteration.
If your results are positive, it means one or more drugs were found in your body above an established level. However, false positives can happen. So if your first test shows that you have drugs in your system, you will have further testing to figure out whether or not you are actually taking a certain drug or drugs.

If you fail your DOT regulated drug test, DOT regulations require your employer to immediately remove you from performing any DOT safety-sensitive job. There may be other consequences, too, like losing your certification or license.
According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), "if the results of a drug test reveal the presence of a lawfully prescribed drug or other medical information, such information must be treated as a confidential medical record." Is that legal? Usually not. Some courts have found it to be an unfair invasion of privacy to watch employees urinate. However, most courts have held that it is reasonable to enforce other safeguards that protect against tampering with urine specimens.
Cannabidiol (CBD) shouldn't show up on a drug test. However, many CBD products contain trace amounts of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), marijuana's main active ingredient. If enough THC is present, it will show up on a drug test. This means that in rare cases, using CBD might lead to a positive drug test.
It is possible for your system to still have enough alcohol in it the next morning that you could fail a urine or blood test for driving under the influence. You would definitely have a problem trying to pass a test that is designed to detect the presence of any alcohol.

A typical urine drug test for employment purposes screens for drugs including amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamines, opiates, nicotine, and alcohol. Urine tests may be required as part of pre-employment screening or may be conducted randomly by employers, especially for employees in certain occupations.
Lab-based drug tests are more accurate. We like to say they are more rigorous, more involved, and more defensible in a court of law, all of which are elements certain organizations must consider, particularly heavily regulated industries, like the DOT.
However, our most commonly requested urine drug test is a 5-panel that screens for the presence of the amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, opiates, and PCP.
Drug test results typically take 24 to 48 hours, depending on the type of test being performed (e.g., urine, hair or DOT).
Is this standard? Where permitted by law, job applicants may be drug screened as part of the post-offer hiring process or prior to accepting a promotion into management. Any applicant who tests positive for illegal drug use will not be hired or promoted, and may be terminated.

Labcorp performs initial drug screening using immunoassay. An immunoassay is a test that uses antibodies to detect the presence of drugs and other substances in urine. The initial screening process does not measure the specific amount of drug present in urine samples.

A sample that produces a drug test level below the cutoff is deemed negative, while a sample that produces a drug test level at or above the cutoff is deemed positive.
In the case of urine analysis, drug testing cutoff levels are measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml). For example, an initial screening for marijuana must show at least 50 ng/ml, and then confirmatory tests must prove at least 15 ng/ml.
