TTF stands for TrueType Font, a relativelyolder font, while OTF stands for OpenType Font, which wasbased in part on the TrueType standard. A significantdifference between the two is in their capabilities. It maybe taking much longer than expected, but the number of OTFfonts is already on the rise.
To install a font on Windows, download itin OpenType (.otf), PostScript Type 1 (.pfb + .pfm),TrueType (.ttf), or TrueType Collection (.ttc) format. Youcan also press the Windows key once to open the Startmenu or Start screen, type “Fonts” to searchyour system, and click the Fonts folder shortcut thatappears.
TrueType was developed by Apple but is also supported byMicrosoft Windows. Therefore, a Mac TrueType fontwill need to be converted to the Windows version inorder for it to work in Windows. OpenType -.OTF file extension. OpenType font files are alsocross-platform and are based on the TrueType format.
To install the TrueType font in Windows:
- Click on Start, Select, Settings and click on ControlPanel.
- Click on Fonts, click on File in the main tool bar and selectInstall New Font.
- Select the folder where the font is located.
- The fonts will appear; select the desired font that is titledTrueType and click on OK.
An OTF file is a font file saved in theOpenType format developed by Adobe and Microsoft. It combinesaspects of the PostScript and TrueType font formats. OTFfonts are fully scalable, meaning the characters can be resizedwithout losing quality.
Collection of fonts saved in the TrueType (.TTF)format; used to deliver multiple fonts in a single file;useful for combining fonts that share many glyphs in common.TTC files allow multiple fonts to share glyph sets, which reduces the overall disk space required by thefonts.
A TTF file can only be damaged by a virusbut not transmit a virus. As Menhir already wrote 3 yearsago, a font file can not contain a virus as afont file is a passive file. A virus can onlyactivate itself when included in an executable (exe)file.
You can use EOT (Embedded OpenType) filesfor Internet Explorer and either OTF(OpenType) or TTF (TrueType) for the rest. (Additionaloptions include WOFF (Web Open Font Format) and SVG(Scalable Vector Graphics) but we will stick to more commontypes here.)
