The dragon answered that Grendel improved the humans, forcing them to think and scheme. He calls Grendel “the brute existent by which they [the humans] learn to define themselves.” The dragon is able to see that the humans need Grendel. Their antagonistic relationship propels the humans to improve.
Why does Grendel spare Unferth's life? Grendel is not hungry. Unferth begs for his life to be spared. Grendel's mother kills Unferth instead.
Grendel tries to communicate with the humans, but they do not understand his words. As Grendel watches them plan their attack, he realizes that the humans are no dull-witted animals, but thinking, pattern-making beings, and therefore more dangerous than any creatures he has thus far encountered.

Hrothgar's throne is protected by God so Grendel cannot touch it because Grendel, a monster born of a pair of monsters who were decended from Cain, cannot know God's love.
The men of the meadhall, including Hrothgar and Wealtheow's brother, are too terrified to defend the queen, yet Grendel does not kill her. He thinks about it and changes his mind. After he leaves the meadhall, he claims to be over his fascination with Wealtheow.
Grendel kills without remorse in the most gruesome and gory ways. He splits his victims in pieces with their blood gushing out in every direction, and consumed their disfigured corpses. He is considered to be dangerous, evil, and cold-blooded because he killed daily with no mercy for his poor victims.
hrothgar pledges his life-long friendship to Bewoulf, declaring that "wheresoever you go, wheresoever I am, should you need help, my friend, I will be there." Beowulf and his men move into Herot for the night while Hrothgar sleeps peacefully.

Grendel terrorizes the Danes every night, killing them and defeating their efforts to fight back. The Danes suffer many years of fear, danger, and death at the hands of Grendel. Eventually, however, a young Geatish warrior named Beowulf hears of Hrothgar's plight.
What happens the day after Beowulf defeats Grendel? What does Grendel's mother do the night after Grendel was murdered? She goes to Herot to avenge her son's death. She kills Hrothgar's closet friend, retrieves Grendel's arm from the rafters where Beowulf had hung it, and returns to her lake.

How does the queen affect him? Unferth is really bitter because he can't die and he can't kill Grendel (and people make fun of him). The queen calms him down.
On pg 27 he says, "I knew i was dealing with no dull mechanical bull but with thinking creatures, pattern makers, the most dangerous things i'd ever met." The reason why Grendel is scared of these people and believes their dangerous is because they use their head, they think, unlike the bull and other creatures.

' In Beowulf, Wealhtheow is Hrothgar's queen and the mother of his two sons. She is offered as a wife to king Hrothgar in order to promote peace among the two tribes, the Helmings and Scyldings. This was typical practice among the Anglo-Saxons; women were often called 'peace weavers.
Grendel fears Hrothgar because of the Shaper. The Shaper has made Hrothgar so much more of a magnificent figure than he was before. Grendel was impressed how the Shaper could make things sound all true and real. The Shaper, at the same time, also scared Grendel with his power to change everyone's belief and minds.
Grendel hunts at night in the darkness. He has "swift hard claws," "powerful jaws," and "great teeth." Grendel also has magic powers. He has cast a spell so that the warriors' weapons cannot hurt him: "[T]he hardest iron could not scratch at his skin." Grendel is filled with hatred and blood lust.
