IOWA CITY, Iowa — When Hayden Fry came to Iowa in December of 1978, he found the football program in disarray. Their colors happened to be black and gold, the same as Iowa's, so Hayden dressed his Hawkeyes like the Steelers. But Hayden wanted a different, distinctive decal on the helmets.
The ANF effort originated in the mid-1980s by former UI head football coach Hayden Fry to raise awareness of the importance of farming during a time when farmers faced severe financial stress. A gold ANF decal on the Hawkeye helmets is the effort's signature.

It's the 17th canceled bowl game this season. “On behalf of our whole team, it's just extremely disappointing to end the season this way,” Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said. Iowa finishes with a 6-2 record and a six-game win streak.
IOWA CITY, Iowa — The 15th-ranked University of Iowa football team will face Missouri in the 2020 TransPerfect Music City Bowl on Dec. 30 in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. (CT) from Nissan Stadium and the game will be televised on ESPN.
Why the Steelers' logo is only on one side of the helmetBecause they didn't know how the logo would look with the all-gold helmet, the franchise put it on only one side for a test run. The Steelers told then-equipment manager Jack Hart to only adhere the logo to the right side of the helmets.

At first, this was a temporary measure because the Steelers weren't sure they would like the look of the logo on an all-gold helmet. They wanted to test them before going all-out. Equipment manager Jack Hart was instructed to put the logo only on one side of the helmet – the right side.
These are the colors of the city's official flag which are the colors of the city's namesake Sir William Pitt. The colors black and gold are also representative of the two ingredients to create steel, coal and iron ore. Originally, the team wore gold colored helmets and black jerseys.
In a Twitter post on Thursday, the Hawkeyes unveiled a patch — with the initials JHF for John Hayden Fry — that will be worn on their jerseys throughout the 2020 football season. It marked Iowa's first bowl game since Forest Evashevski led the Hawkeyes to a Rose Bowl victory in 1958.
Where is Nate Stanley now?
Former Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley signed to the Minnesota Vikings back in May, but could be left off the official 53-man roster. According to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Stanley will be waived by the Vikings, but they want him to be on the practice squad.

— The Vikings drafted quarterback Nate Stanley in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft with the 244th overall pick. Stanley also is the fourth player ever drafted by the Vikings from the 244th overall spot, joining Pete Tatman in 1967, Giles Cole in 2000 and Jayron Kearse in 2016.
For true freshman Deuce Hogan, playing the position comes naturally. Hogan appears comfortable doing anything it takes to help his team, and Iowa Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz has taken notice. Hogan (6-4, 213), a 4-star recruit from Southlake, TX, has only been with the Iowa program since January.
