You may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits due to lupus. Lupus, which is an autoimmune disease, is a chronic disorder that can cause increasing damage to the body throughout time. Each person with lupus can suffer different symptoms than someone else with the same disease.
For people with lupus, some treatments can increase the risk of developing potentially fatal infections. However, the majority of people with lupus can expect a normal or near-normal life expectancy. Research has shown that many people with a lupus diagnosis have been living with the disease for up to 40 years.
Lupus occurs when your immune system attacks healthy tissue in your body (autoimmune disease). It appears that people with an inherited predisposition for lupus may develop the disease when they come into contact with something in the environment that can trigger lupus.
The four different types of lupus
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) Systemic lupus is the most common form of lupus—it's what most people mean when they refer to “lupus.” Systemic lupus can be mild or severe.
- Cutaneous lupus erythematosus.
- Drug-induced lupus erythematosus.
- Neonatal lupus.
