When exposed outdoors, foam board insulation can see damage from the Sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Tests have shown that these laminated boards can withstand UV ray damage for a reasonably long time. That said, it's still advisable to cover any foam board insulation exposed to the Sun within 30-60 days at the most.
For fire safety, you must cover the foam insulation with 1/2-inch gypsum board before adding the wood paneling. When you use real wood paneling, proper treatment and conditioning help to avoid problems.
The quick answer is yes and no, because spray foam can be left exposed in some areas of the home with others require a thermal barrier according to the code. If the area of the home that has been sprayed with foam is directly connected to the living space, then it has to be separated by a thermal barrier.
The closed cell spray foam doesn't need a vapor barrier because the spray foam itself functions as a vapor barrier, air barrier and thermal barrier too. However, the open cell spray foam needs a vapor barrier.
Typically, however, it is recommended that you avoid long-term exposure to this indoor environment for at least 24 hours after spray foam has been installed to let the curing of the chemical building agent occur in the environment.
Drywall can be installed over rigid foam board insulation. Multiply the width of the wall by its height to determine how many sheets of drywall will be necessary to cover the insulation. Mark a horizontal chalk line along the foam board 3 inches from the top of the wall, followed by a line 3 inches from the bottom.
Once the insulation has been installed, work can begin installing interior walls. Most homes use drywall on interior walls. There are numerous materials you can use for the exterior of your house, but drywall is by far the most common for interior walls.
Polystyrene is a hard plastic. Styrofoam is a polystyrene plastic. However, Styrofoam isn't the best substrate for adhesive vinyl.
Only water-based acrylic or latex paint should be used on foam insulation, whether you are using the material for crafts or are painting unfinished walls. Avoid any oil-based or other solvent-based paints, these contain chemicals that damage foam. This helps you get the paint into the pores of the foam.
Water-based paint will adhere to the surface of the foam without dissolving it. To find foam-safe paint, look for the words "water-based" or "H2O" on the front of the can. Krylon produces an alternative to their regular paint called Krylon H2O Latex Spray Paint, and many other brands offer similar products.
Elmer's cork foam board's lightweight and sturdy construction makes it a great alternative to heavy traditional corkboards. Perfect for school related presentations, art and photo displays, memory boards, and business needs, its reusable, fine grain surface is thick enough for push pins or tacks.
Because of its resistance to moisture, foam board insulation is a great choice whenever and wherever there is a chance it could get wet, such as: an exterior foundation, inside a basement against the foundation, and on the outside of a house beneath a house wrap.
Electrical tape, also referred to as insulating tape, is used to insulate wiring that conducts electricity, protecting against the transfer of any electrical current to other components or people.
The best glues to use on Styrofoam are the actual Styrofoam glues such as UHU Styrofoam glue, Weldbond and 3M 77. Styrofoam glue comes in both tubes and spray. The adhesive spray, like 3M 77, makes creating projects easier and without the mess. With 3M 77, the glue dries fast and provides permanent bonding.
Foam tapes are used for sound dampening, insulating, gasketing, cushioning/padding, and sealing and are designed to enhance the appearance and improve the overall performance of your product design. The normal temperature range that foam tape can withstand is -40°F to 300°F.
Construction Adhesives (specified for foam)One of my personal favorites for foamboard is foam construction adhesives such as Loctite PL 300 Foamboard VOC Latex Construction Adhesive, Loctite Power Grab All Purpose Construction Adhesive, or Liquid Nails LN604 Projects & Foamboard Adhesive.
Housewrap tape helps to seal all seams on housewrap applications including sheathing, insulation, and vapor barrier materials used in residential and commercial construction applications. Housewrap tape is applied after the entire building has been wrapped.
It sticks well and will stick to foam. However, I doubt any tape is truly permanent.
Aluminum foil tapes are used on seams and joints of fiberglass and aluminum backed duct board. Coated with a rubber based pressure sensitive adhesive, they provide an excellent barrier to vapor and conform to irregular surfaces. Aluminum foil tape may be used for shielding and covering thermal insulation.
